Pumpkin man carves out quite a reputation
11:50am Wednesday 23rd October 2013 in Local News
BY day, Dave Finkle is best known for his job as farm manager at Barleylands but he has a hidden record-breaking talent for pumpkin carving.
Dave, 34, lovingly etches detailed cartoon characters, famous faces and portraits into pumpkins.
He also holds two Guinness World Records for carving one pumpkin in just 20.03 seconds, the fastest ever recorded, and carving the most pumpkins in an hour- 102.
He first discovered his hidden talent in 2008 when he took part in a village pumpkin growing competition in aid of Essex Air Ambulance.
Dave, from Little Baddow, said: "Being a farmer I was red hot favourite but unfortunatley I got beat, and to make it worse it was by my mother in law! The following evening we all agreed to go down the pub with a carved pumpkin and it was then I found out I could do something different.
"I would never say I'm a good artist but I've always been good at creating things out of nothing.
"People appreciate the skill which goes into creating the pumpkins but a few hours later it's just a pile of rubbish."
After his unique creations have been admired Dave feeds them to the pigs at Barleylands.
He joined the farm park and craft village, in Billericay, earlier this year.
To mark his first Halloween as farm manager Mr Finkle will be showing off his carving skills in front of visitors.
The Spooky Nights events, taking place at Barleylands on Wednesday, October 30, and Thursday, October 31, will also include trick or treating, spooky walks and gruesome games.
Dave added: "The carvings I will be doing for Spooky Nights are very detailed and will include Casper the ghost and well known celebrities etched into the pumpkin’s side. This is my first Halloween at Barleylands and I can’t wait to show off my pumpkins”.
