We’re on the run to Paris!
6:00am Monday 28th October 2013 in Local News
TWO friends from Shoebury will be tackling a 202-mile charity run from Big Ben to the Eiffel Tower .
Ian Shelley, 42, and his running partner, 43-year-old Bill Guiver, will begin the mammoth challenge on Monday, July 28 next year, and hope to complete the run in three to four days.
They plan to run from London to Newhaven, take the ferry across to Dieppe, and continue on to the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Ian, of Bunters Avenue, said: “Me and Bill are part of a Facebook running group called Bosh, and we’ve run about six marathons together so far.
“We want to run from Big Ben to Newhaven – which is approximately 72 miles – in the first day, and hopefullywe’ll make it as continuous as possible from there.
“We will endeavour to get up to the top of the Eiffel Tower at the end even though our legs will probably be like jelly by then!
The duo will be running in aid of anorexia charity, B-Eat, which provide information and advice on all aspects of eating disorders, and for Southend-based mental health charity, Southend Mind.
Ian’s 17-year-old daughter, Chloe, was diagnosed with anorexia earlier this year, and has been attending therapy sessions.
He said: “My daughter is a real inspiration to me. We saw her fading away before our eyes, and at one point she was down to fiveand- a-half stone, but she’s getting better and stronger every day.
“Running was a real focal point for me and helped me through, and we’re hoping by doing the run it will raise money and awareness for all mental health issues.”
Bill, of Richmond Avenue, says he is starting to map out his training regime to prepare for the big day. He said: “We’re both really looking forward to it. I currently average around 50 or 60 miles per week, so between now and the challenge I’ll be gradually upping my mileage.”
The duo are appealing to the public for help and support in any way they are able to. Ian added: “What we’re looking for is support and sponsorship of any kind – be it with kit or money.”
