Teen close to death taking legal high

Echo: Jack Burrows, of Southchurch Road shop Oh Yeah, decided to stop selling Pandora's Box after hearing of its effects Jack Burrows, of Southchurch Road shop Oh Yeah, decided to stop selling Pandora's Box after hearing of its effects

A TEENAGER was close to death after taking a ‘legal high’ freely available in Southend shops.

The 16-year-old and a 19-yearold, who did not know each other, were both taken to Southend Hospital after smoking cannabis substitute ‘Pandora’s Box’ – an artificial chemical which was bought in smoking paraphernalia shop Oh Yeah.

The shop, in Southchurch Road, has since stopped selling the product.

The 16-year-old, a South Essex College student from Chelmsford, was found near Warrior Square just after 11.30am on Thursday in a druginduced stupor.

He had been running into the road, seemingly out of his wits, before his legs gave way and he collapsed in the street.

Once at hospital, his heart rate was recorded at 200 beats per minute – far above the 65 beats per minute expected for a person his age.

His mother, who did not want to be named, said she did not know for three hours whether he would live or die and doctors had told her he was very close to suffering a heart attack.

She said: “It was close to being a parent’s worst nightmare.

“I could have been arranging his funeral right now instead of Christmas – that’s how dangerous this stuff is.

“I’m not trying to defend my son, because he did something really stupid, but where is the logic in the fact he would be turned away trying to buy poison in a hardware store, but he could just go into one of these shops and get this stuff in a pretty packet, no questions asked?

“He’s recovering well and will be back in college this week, but the doctors said he could have further episodes for weeks or months.

“We’ll just have to wait and see whether there’s any permanent damage.”

Legal highs can be sold to anyone over 18 – in this instance, the 16-year-old didn’t buy it and was said to have been given it by a friend.

The 19-year-old was reported unwell at 12.10pm and was also taken to Southend Hospital.

Chief Inspector Glen Pavelin led Essex Police’s week of action on legal highs last week and said officers had been visiting schools to give children advice.

He said: “Although these substances are branded as legal, their composition is largely unknown.

“Some are potentially unsafe and others feasibly contain illegal substances.

“Most retailers were unaware of the potential health risks to their customers or the legal risks to themselves.”

Everyone needs to wake up and realise people take drugs and enjoy doing so and rightfully should be able to take them safely. There is less known about legal highs then illegal drugs! Yes I know taking drugs ruins lives but so does alcohol, smoking, eating, driving, infact anything can ruin anyone's lives not always the obvious. Drugs are part of life and we all should not be ignorant and bury this problem time after time.

the percentage of the UK population that ride horses is about 6%.......the percentage of people regularly using illegal drugs is well over 20% for 18 to 30 age group alone....... it's true that people have been riding horses for thousands of years, and they have also been taking drugs in one form or another for a very long time. How the statistics truly stack up i don't know, but the suggestion that taking well known and established drugs is a lot safer than exposing yourself to unkown compounds in so called 'legal highs' is a prefectly reasonable one.....

Nobody has done anything illegal here. Until "legal highs" are deemed illegal then Oh Yeah do nothing wrong. In fact they have acted quite responsibly in this instance. I don't see supermarkets removing alcohol from their shelves because of the harm in could potentially do.
People are responsible for their own actions, that is why age limits are imposed on purchasing drug based products, those under that age are not deemed responsible enough. Do not go blaming suppliers of legal products because of misuse by stupid or misguided individuals.

What a ludicrous argument.
More people have died from crossing the road that from drinking half a bottle of whisky, but that doesn't make the latter safe or negate its stupidity in any way.
In any case death is not the only detrimental effect from taking narcotic drugs. In fact, in terms of the overall effect on society as well as the individual, death is the least of the problems they cause, from a numbers point of view.
Statistics are all well and good, provided you think about what they actually mean, and remember that the statistic you hear may only be a small part of the story.

Here we go, the usual baying mob of lefties telling us all how it's OK to do it and we could fall off a horse/go under a bus blah blah blah.

FACT, these were LEGAL "highs" and look at the effect they had.

People managed to get through life without the need for props for centuries. Strangely enough we fought two world wars without the aid of cocaine, heroin and other substances (cue the usual lefties with some cooked up fantasy about Spitfire pilots being coked out of their heads).

Everybody has problems in life but most of us manage to scrape through without drugs. But while ever you have the loony left pushing cr@p like this just because they can, you will have kids killing or damaging themselves for life.

As for "legal" highs, what the hell is that supposed to mean. High? How high do these idiots want to be? What is so dreadful about life that they cannot find some meaningful occupation that gives them some kind of buzz or pleasure.

Just one death from taking illegal drugs or one hospital visit from "legal"highs, is one drug too many and there is NO justification for it whatsoever. Not least the hospital time they take up occupying already hard pressed medical staff when there are other people needing attention who are ill through no fault of their own.

As usual I will ignore the usual baying mob of haters. I speak the truth and you don't like it. Well, tough.

You sir are a moron
The one thing you tend to learn when contributing to forums and areas of debate is that once a contributor resorts to name calling you know very well that their ability to debate is over. Their argument has failed and they are unable to keep up the pretense that they think they know better.
Even though, it seems, my opinions were unpopular (as proven by those people with multiple log-ons) I do not see anyone attempting to counter this opinion or debate it. Yet what I do see is that my opinion has got under at least one person's skin and that that someone does not appear articulate enough or adult enough to formulate any coherent argument against it.

I think you will find and it is well documented that amphetamines (speed) were widely used by troops in WWII to keep them awake and alert.

ha ha ha at all these boring housewives with nothing better to do than comment on the echo site (which no-one really takes much notice of or cares about) and tap the crap out of the thumbs up/down voting.

people take drugs for whatever reason of their own, get over it. being a whiney loser about it isn't going to change anything.

like someone else on here said, think about your self-righteous opinions on drugs next time you're downing the 7th cup of tea for the day.

You're on. I've not had a cuppa since yesterday afternoon I think, but to test your theory out I will abstain for a week and will let you know how I feel after a strong cup of tea at 15:45 next Weds.

I bet the effects won't include staggering around the streets bleary eyed, giggling to myself nor colouring in a picture of an ambulance brown.

That means no coca cola or fizzy drinks with caffeine either. And why would you go "staggering around the streets bleary eyed, giggling to myself nor colouring in a picture of an ambulance brown." Is that what you think cannabis does? Ha ha! You can bet your boots you have walked past people today who have had a spliff and you would not be able to tell the difference, unlike alcohol which does make you conspicuous.
.
Different drugs work in different ways, there are downers like heroin and alcohol which suppress your senses and then there are uppers like amphetamine, cocaine and caffeine. You won't stagger anywhere after a line of coke or a good dose of caffeine but you will be hyper active, on edge and you won't be able to sleep. That is what uppers do to you. And after a week caffeine free you WILL notice a big difference, I know, I did try it.
.
Bet you don't do it.

Haze (he he, good weed!) if you really do this then I salute you sir because you will learn something from it. Ideally if you do without tea, coffee, coke etc for a week, then have a can of coca cola or red bull, which will make the effects of caffeine very clear! But don't expect to feel like you have drunk half a bottle of scotch, caffeine is an "upper" not a "downer".
.
Likewise, cannabis is a very subtle drug, most first time users say they don't feel any different, except they like the music a bit more and they fancy a Mars bar! Low to medium doses of cannabis sharpen the senses, at higher doses you might just go to sleep but you won't "stagger" around first and you will never die from an overdose.
.
These legal highs are an altogether different matter, anyone who uses them has to be mad, or too young to buy alcohol so they get the legal highs, Bad news! None of them have been tested in any way, they could give you cancer in 10 years time, we just don't know, whereas there is a huge body of evidence that you are highly unlikely to have any problems with drugs like cannabis

Do you remember when half the country used to go out on a sunny summer sunday afternoon looking for a nice little country pub to have a pint or two before going home with a smile on your face? Do you know that feeling when you are tired out and gasping for a cup of tea/coffee/coca-cola and after you have had one you seem refreshed and full of energy? THAT IS THE DRUG WORKING? As for "legal" highs, what the hell is that supposed to mean. High? How high do these idiots want to be? What is so dreadful about life that they cannot find some meaningful occupation that gives them some kind of buzz or pleasure.

Just one death from taking illegal drugs or one hospital visit from "legal"highs, is one drug too many and there is NO justification for it whatsoever. Not least the hospital time they take up occupying already hard pressed medical staff when there are other people needing attention who are ill through no fault of their own.

Unlike marijuana, which is **** near impossible to overdose on, ingesting too much spice can induce intense hallucinations, palpitations, inability to speak, vomiting, psychotic episodes, near death experiences, paranoia, agitation, tremours, overheating or heart attacks

A new study, “Ischemic stroke after use of the synthetic marijuana 'spice,'” published Nov. 8 in Neurology by medical researchers at the University of South Florida, shows a compelling link between synthetic cannabis and the risk of stroke.

Underground manufacturers soak various herbs like damiana, lavender and blue lotus in a chemical solution of cannabinoids. Often, the solutions include mystery ingredients like synthetic opioids, bronchodilators and insecticides like thymol. Alternatively, they allow the chemicals to evaporate into the herbs. Though this technique has shown to be uneven, creating “hot spots” where chemicals are more concentrated.

I have never tried these "legal highs" and I don't intend to, they are completely untested and could have all sorts of seriously bad after effects. However, I was at a party in the summer where a couple of the younger chaps had some of this "Spice" and the effect was shocking. They had one joint between them and they looked and sounded more like they'd had half a bottle of whiskey each, and they didn't look very happy about it either.
.
What I don't understand is that the EU won't let us have real coal tar in coal tar soap any more despite the fact that there is not an ounce of proof that anyone has ever been harmed by using coal tar soap, just the opposite, the old coal tar soap is just about the only thing (apart from strong UV light) that keeps psoriasis at bay but we're not allowed to use it any more (I buy mine from the US now) and yet kids of any age can buy this Spice stuff over the counter! There is something seriously wrong with the laws of this country that allow people to buy Spice but ban cannabis, the most benign recreational drug in the world. Roll on decriminalisation.
.
Say NO to legal drugs, they are the worst of the lot, say YES to cannabis, the only recreational drug in the world that will not kill you from an overdose.

Blimey, you're quick. And as soon as there's anther religious story I bet it happens again, wait and see, mind you I do have some quite effective anti religious arguments which the god squad obviously hate cos there's not much they can say back, so they report me, every time. I can only guess you like being banned, to be banned once (has probably happened to most of us) to banned twice is careless to be a banned a third time is sheer stupidity (especially within 2 months)

Not when the remark is about religion, they keep removing the whole account, I can only assume that the person who makes those decisions is a devout christian but if they think they are going to stop me they can think again.

I've never been to their new shop in Southchurch Road but they were at the High Street end of Queens Road for twenty years so hardly seedy (I assume young Mr Burrows is the original proprietors son). As for the authorities "allowing" the shop to do business, we do not live in a Police state yet and the shop is not doing anything illegal so there is no reason whatsoever for any "authorities" to intervene in any way. Wish you'd get your facts right before you post Asbo.

I didn't say it was did I Asbo? Oh really InTheKnowOk? Yawn. Well no -one I know is psychotic in any way although your messianic fervour suggests you might be a bit psychotic yourself. If the figures do support your assertion then the numbers have to be so low that they are not that important compared to say the million people who have to attend hospital each year for alcohol related problems. You should ease up Mr Angry, you'll do yourself a mischief, maybe you should try a little medicinal cannabis to chill you out a bit.

Err yes they are. Most of my generation smoked dope back in the sixties, you couldn't go anywhere where there were young people without finding the weed but the VAST majority were not and never have been interested in using any other drugs, only a certain type of person, usually the damaged individuals with a death wish would stick needles in their arms or use anything else that can kill them. Thats the big attraction of cannabis, it doesn't turn you into a bumbling fool like alcohol and IT WON'T KILL YOU and that is why the VAST majority who like cannabis stick to cannabis and stay away from anyhting else. Besides most people I know avoid the really strong ones and prefer medium grade skunks which are no different to what we had decades ago. Trouble with you Asbo is that you are like a conspiracy theorist, you read in the Sun that the strength is going up and you think the country is going to be swamped by cannabis addicts sprawled all over the pavements. life or death is not the only measure. gouging your eyes out probably won't kill you either.

You are beyond hope Asbo. If dope was so dangerous I am sure I would have seen some of the people I know who have smoked for 40 years having problems but I don't, no-one has had any problems and we are all still toking, the only people I know who have had problems with their recreational drugs are the people who like a drink, one or two of them HAVE had problems

Wish you'd get your facts right before you post Asbo.
queens road is bong boulevard. selling "legal" highs to teens is not exactly a great business model. got that truthy?
I didn't say it was did I Asbo? I gave my views on legal highs earlier in case you have forgotten and they are no different to most of the other contributors to this thread, they should be banned, and I'm pleased to see that Oh Yeah are going to stop selling them but someone else will. Got that Asbo?
.
Me take cannabis? .LOL.. I'd rather stick a pick axe up my @rse than dabble in your filthy shenanigans

Actually it's harmless fun but please feel free to stick the pick axe where the sun don't shine, that would be entirely appropriate for a rancid old bigot like you.

I don't use bongs and I may be older than you in years but you are the one stuck in a rut with a seized up dinosaur brain. And wtf do you mean rumbled elsewhere? How many times do I have to tell you before that clanky old brain of yours gets it, I only open a new account when the old one gets erased as it always does when I make remarks about christianity, the most stupid religion in the world. One account and one only.

I don't think you have had 3 usernames banned because of religious posts

I think it's just a ruse to try and confuse the rest of us
