Woman in her 70s mugged in alley in Southend town centre

Echo: Woman in her 70s mugged in alley in town centre Woman in her 70s mugged in alley in town centre

A WOMAN in her 70s was mugged by thugs in Southend town centre in broad daylight on Friday.

The victim was walking from Sainsbury’s in London Road to the narrow path between the Odeon and the Victoria shopping centre.

As she was in there, about 11am, she was approached by two men who pushed her against the wall and stole her purse containing cash and her bank cards.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, or for anyone who saw the two men follow her down London Road.

Det Con Dave Thompson, from Southend CID, said: “The victim has been left very shaken by this appalling action. I would urge anyone who was in the relevant area at the time that this occurred and who thinks they have information to get in touch.

"These men should not be able to get away with this. They have targeted a defenceless elderly woman for the sake of £40 in cash. If anyone knows who they are I would ask them to call me on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Was thinking something similar. Ok SBC, let's look at the quality of your CCTV system (picture quality and coverage) also if another incident that took place yesterday can be part explained with what time the man who was found in the loos opposite Churchills entered the cubicle he was found in. Suspect which one of maybe 2 reasons for the mans passing, but will not comment until then. On this story, I also hope the 2 muggers are caught and punished. Also hope the lady who was mugged has a good support network in place. Attacked somewhere public in broad daylight in the run up to Xmas when the town is reasonably busy with Xmas shoppers as well as cinema goers beggers belief!

If someone did that to my Mother and I found out who they was wild horses would not be able to hold me back, this sort of crime makes my blood boil

They have the cheek to call them 'men' in the news report, I could think of a few other names that would suit them much better!!!

Its interesting you should say that & I think many people would feel the same, which is why I find it strange that retaliation in these matters are rare.

This kind of crime will go on, they do not care about harming people, they are not even bothered about the silly laws we have in the country, going to prison is home for them, there needs to be a more severe punishment, but I feel the UK!! Is being sh,t on by a government that does not know what to do, like Cameron said, HUG A HOODY, WHAT SH,T.

It's not just the old though is it .. There is no discrimination when it comes to mugging .. Personally I would lock this piece of scum up for 5 years, if this was so others would think twice about committing such crimes, as it is they get let off with a stupid fine which is no deterrent whatsoever. ..

Hope the lady recovers well and is made of much sterner stuff than her cowardly attackers are bound to be. Pathetic wimps, picking on an elderly lady!

That passage between the Plaza centre and the Odeon is often very deserted, but then again so is most of the horrible barren area between Southend Victoria station and the High Street. There's not really a lot to attract anyone to the area and have a nice little wander is there, the dull greyness makes everyone want to get away from the place as quickly as possible! Unless they have a skateboard I suppose.

Retaliation is rare because, although the muggers will have loads of sympathetic problems and will be trying to turn their life around, and so will get let off with minimal punishment, the person retaliating will be made an example of.

A weekday, middle of the day, busy part of town, yet this sort of thing is allowed to happen? We have all this CCTV coverage of the town centre yet incidents like this are not seen or acted upon. Why?
During shopping hours CCTV seems to be prioritised to help catch shoplifters. The town centre's CCTV is in constant radio contact with staff/managers of all the major shops. This is called "Shop Watch". It seems the CCTV cameras are giving more importance to watching for crimes against businesses than keeping watch for crimes against the person.
If this sort of incident is now happening in plain sight, in a busy part of town, at a busy time of day, it only goes to show that muggers are finding it is easy pickings and urgent questions need to be asked as to where the deterrant is.

This is utterly disgusting and I hope the woman will be okay, although I have my doubts :(

The muggers are below pondlife, no doubt they will be bragging to their little mates about how hard they are, not sure they quite grasp the definition of that word though.

I go with the "why no CCTV" question, why was there no CCTV and why no description?

I am happy to say i agree with nebs on this one..... in reality the judiciary protect the 'system' and 'justice' for victims of crime is more or less an abstract concept....but any form of vigilantism would be dealt with very severley by the courts, because it threatens their notion of 'law and order'....... if anyone doubts this, just look at the sentences dished out a couple of years back in the riots.... years in prison for stealing a can of drink or a tee shirt ! these were much harsher sentences than thugs get for kicking and stamping on someones head for 'fun'..... because that is not a threat to the establishment

What these so called people need is scum stamped on there forehead where the in lasts for a year, then people will know what kind of people they are, and maybe they will change there way in life, if they don't stamp them again!!
