UPSET councillors have criticised Essex County Council after repairs to Canvey’s “most hazardous” pavements were not deemed a priority.

Canvey councillors have been fighting for urgent action to fix the pavements along Linden Way, for two months.

The road has been plagued by broken kerbstones, cracked tarmac and potholes.

It was first highlighted as a problem area in 2012 as part of an investigation by councillors into the poor condition of the island’s pavements.

However, the damage has still not been rectified.

Highways officers have visited the site, but the defects have been classified as “non-urgent”.

Councillor Peter May, who represents Central ward, said: “It is absolutely disgusting this has been allowed to go on for so long. I cannot believe they do not see this as a priority.

“It is a real safety issue. Anyone walking along could trip and hurt themselves.

“The condition of the pavements is so bad and we have asked repeatedly for them to be repaired, but nothing is being done.”

Concerns have been raised the damage is dangerous to pedestrians, particularly as street lights are due to be switched off between midnight and 5am in the new year.

A county council spokesman said: “An Essex Highways officer conducted a robust investigation and assessment of the highways defects on Linden Way, Canvey, on November 18.

“In line with the Essex Highways’ maintenance strategy these defects have been assessed as non-urgent. However, they will continue to be monitored and action will be taken if necessary.”
