Updated: Man left with serious facial injuries after Rayleigh assault

A MAN was left with serious facial injuries after he was attacked by a group of teenagers.

Police were called to The Approach, Rayleigh, shortly before 1am on Saturday after paramedics found the man, aged 39, badly hurt.

He was taken to Southend Hospital but later transferred to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, for specialist surgery to his facial injuries.

It is thought he was driving to pick up a family member from Rayleigh railway station when he was flagged down by a gang of around 12 teenagers.

The same group were seen earlier in the evening trying to flag down other motorists passing the junction of Down Hall Road and Creswick Avenue.

They assaulted another man and smashed the windows of a cab belonging to Rayleigh Taxis.

Police are carrying out extensive house-to-house enquiries searching for witnesses.

They believe the youngsters responsible live locally.

Dc Jon Holden, investigating officer, said: "Between midnight to 1am on Saturday, we received four separate calls relating to a number of mid to late-aged teenagers loitering at the entrance to Creswick Avenue.

"They were attempting to flag down passing motorists with the intention of intimidating them.

"These young men are responsible for not only assaulting the man who is now at Broomfield Hospital, but also another man who was returning home after a night out in a taxi and damage to the taxi.

"We need to identify this group and their parents.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Yes, absolutely report it, the more info the police have the better chance of finding the wastes of oxygen and adding that to the charge list will ensure they lose their virginity in HMP Chelmsford.

Seem to be a lot of vicious crime in Rayleigh in the last couple of yrs. Hope the person makes a full recovery and not scarred for life.

Also if the police received 4 seperate calls, why didnt they bother popping down the hill to investigate? Poor policing.

OMG this is really terrible!!! I hope they catch them and quickly!

There, but for the Grace of God could go any one of us, just being in the wrong place at the wrong time, stopping the flagging down whilst in your own car or, God forbid, walking along minding your own business. It really makes me go cold at the thought of this.

I don't know what the hell is the matter with some people nowadays, but they are feral and that is putting it lightly!

To Deekat661, I fully agree with the other posters who suggest that you report your own assault to the police, it is not too late by any means and your own account and statement could indeed be invaluable.

I hope you are okay and I also hope that the poor sod who has ended up in hospital will make a full recovery.

I realise your comments are well intentioned, but are you serious ? "better for xmas" which year ?...... this poor guy would have suffered terrible injuries to be transferred to broomfield..... we are talking multiple fractures and months of painful reconstructive surgery, not to mention psycological rehabilitation...... this filth should be charged with attempted murder if there was any real justice in this country, but of course there isn't.....

I agree with other comments deekat6661, you should report it now, it is not too late! And you may be able to give vital info which may also be relevant to this case.

In general though, it does show that people should always report this type of thing, may just save someone else from suffering.

I am being naive, only I thought Rayleigh was quite a respectable place??

You were right, Rayleigh WAS a lovely place to live, but after the council decided to let a night club open until 3.am plus a number of pubs / bars to open very late - it sucks in all of the flotsam from surrounding areas. The High street is virtually a no-go area between 2.00 and 3.00 am Saturday and Sunday nights -

Action needs taking before Rayleigh becomes the sh1thole of Essex. Once again last night I had a load of idiots from the TOWIE bar walking in the middle of the road and running backwards and forwards in front of my car.

We need to lose a few of these town centre bars. And the licensing laws here need tightening so tight their @rses squeak.

Just wait till the lights go off...

Rayleigh is a good night out, and most people enjoying it don't cause trouble. Plus the bars and pubs on the High Street are nothing to do with teenagers loitering down near the station.

The bars have nothing to do with this particular assault, it is to do with brattish, feral "things" that took it upon themselves to deliberately try and stop passing motorists in order to damage them and damage them they did.

This awful incident is nothing to do with pubs and clubs, but teens between the ages of 13 and 19.

I've been saying on this site for the past couple of years how bad Rayleigh has become and that was before Bar Blanco and Lynx turned up or even the late closing time the Spread Eagle has now.
The parents are just as responsible and should be made to pay. For instance, lose their jobs (if they have any), their homes repossessed and they should not be allowed to live within 25 miles of Rayleigh.
The place is full of scum and makes Southend look like a quiet country village where a lost cat is a major incident.
