A KNIFE-WIELDING robber threatened staff before fleeing with £60 of tobacco.

The hooded suspect entered Martins Newsagents, in Ballards Walk, Laindon, just before 6pm on Friday, and brandished the knife before demanding staff open the till.

The suspect in the incident on Friday is described as a white male, aged about 27, 5ft 7ins tall and of a stocky build.

He had a hood up and a scarf across the lower part of his face.

He was also wearing black jogging bottoms, black trainers with white markings on them, a khaki green coat, which was zipped up, and a light grey hooded top underneath.

He wore black gloves and spoke with a local accent.

Anyone who saw the suspect either before or after the robbery, or who has any other information which could assist police, is asked to call Det Con Deborah Williams at Basildon CID on 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Ballards Walk is not in Laindon. As previously pointed out when this was first reported it is in Lee Chapel North which is part of the Basildon area of the whole Laindon/Basildon/Pit

Maybe you should be a geography teacher. In the meantime, let's hope this guy can gets away with it. Nothing better then a bit of criminal activity!

In my opinion the employees safety is being disregarded by the company in favour of saving staffing costs.
Just think about the times you have visited your local Martins, particularly in the afternoons/evenings, how many staff do you see working......very often it will be just the one employee. This certainly case at Martins at the Barge, Clayhill Road and at The Kingswood shop.

Armed robbery is not a scumbag crime. I agree street robberies are for scumbags, but targeting big organisations for large money can only be a good thing. But if I was to rob somewhere, it would be a bookies or possibly a bank. Not martins for 60 quid.

What a small man if that is what you are or just a kid trying to be big. We all pay for thief one way or another. The big companies put up prices or if the thief is caught we pay for his time inside. Leg irons and fill in pot holes for those caught if not shot
