A CHARITY which takes in unwanted cats and kittens is running out of space.

Southend Cats’ Protection has warned owners to neuter their pets to prevent the large numbers of unwanted and abandoned cats coming into its care.

Pet owners can have their cat neutered at a fraction of the usual cost via the charity’s National Neutering Scheme.

Vouchers worth £26 for females and £20 for males can be used towards the cost of neutering. Anyone living in postcode areas SS0 SS1 SS2 SS3 SS4 and SS9 can apply and their are no exceptions.

A spokesman for the charity said: “Last year we were inundated with kittens and at one point, had about 80 in our care.

“We want to try and prevent this from happening again and hope that people will take advantage of our scheme before unwanted pregnancies occur.

“Most vets will accept the vouchers and we recommend that cats are neutered at around five months – this may seem young, but kittens can become pregnant at this age.

“Neutered cats live longer and healthier lives and some cancers can also be prevented.”
