Politicians and activists bade an emotional farewell to Tony Benn.

Onlookers clapped through tears as the body of the veteran Labour MP, who died on March 14 aged 88, was driven from the Palace of Westminster to St Margaret’s Church, Westminster, this morning.

Mr Benn, whose family home for more than 100 years was Stansgate Abbey Farm, in Steeple, was only the second politician after Baroness Thatcher to be allowed to rest overnight at the Palace of Westminster’ Chapel of St Mary Undercroft.

Representative from causes he supported during his 51-year political career lined the route, including Stop The War, the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign, trade unions and several opposing government cuts.

The funeral was followed by a private family cremation and a memorial meeting will be held later in the year.

A political failure who lost every battle he fought and who nearly destroyed Labour and whose loony left antics helped keep Thatcher in power for a generation.

What has he achieved politically since 1979? He became nothing more than a caricature of a loony left wing politician. Look at him through rose tinted glasses if you like but it is hypocritical for all those politicians heaping praise on him in death when they vilified, ridiculed and ignored him in life.

Poortaxpayer is on the money.

Tony Benn was too far left even for the 80's Labour party. People like him and Michael Foot were a *gift* for the Tories.

To be fair to the man though I think he spoke more sense in the last 10 years of his life, and his opinions of Iraq and Tony Blair were pretty much spot on.

Didn't notice anyone singing and dancing in the streets and crowing about his death like the leftscum did when Maggie died.. Nor did we see the same disrespectful reaction for Mandela.

I bet the Lefties would have been outraged if that had happened but it was OK for them to do it at Margaret Thatcher's funeral. Shows the utter hypocrisy of the Left who scream and shout when anyone attacks them but think it's OK to shout down everyone else and decry their beliefs.

Both these characters are hardly to be venerated. Mrs Thatcher had her downside but she was more of a Socialist than Benn - giving people the right to own their own houses. I didn't agree with everything she did but there were some positives.

Still. there are plenty of leftie loons to replace him to ensure people will be voting UKIP and Conservative.

Trouble is these morons get everywhere, like vermin - and are responsible for the parlous state this country is now in.

But folk keep voting them in.

Down arrow away.... I love it when my comments upset you. ;D

I was a fan of Anthony Wedgewood Benn.

He managed to fool some of the people all of the time, by pretending to be a socialist. In fact he lived in an expensive house in Holland Park, & was fabulously wealthy.

Your comments don't upset me, they just bore me with your longwinded rants constantly going over the same things again and again with little relevance to the story they are attached to.

What a sad and twisted creature you are. Where do you get your extremist views?
