SECOND World War planes have been added to a list of rare aircraft appearing on South Essex Armed Forces Day at Barleylands.

The planes, which will include a Supermarine Spitfire MK XI and Hawker Hurricane MK IIB, will be flying over the showground, near Billericay, on June 21 and June 22.

They will take their place alongside planes from the Great War Display Team, which will mark 100 years since the start of the First World War.

History groups, military vehicles and a full size replica of a Spitfire will be on display at Barleylands, in Barleylands Road, Billericay.

Dan Rodgers, chairman of the Essex Military Support Association, which is organising the event, said: “It’s exciting to have more historic aircraft that are so iconic joining us on the day.

With the Great War Display Team already confirmed this is another fantastic opportunity for the people of Essex to come out to see what will be a great display and also honour all those that fought so hard for us during the Second World War.”

The event will be one of only four in the whole UK, and the only event in Essex to also have a full team of all nine replica aircraft from the First World War.

The Essex Military Support Association has teamed up with Show Maries Aerodrome, Europe’s only surviving Great War aerodrome, to bring a number of bi-planes and tri-planes to grace the skies over the Barleylands Showground as well as nearby Basildon, Billericay and Wickford areas.

Tickets cost £10 per adult, £3.50 for under 16’s, under fives are free and can be bought from www.essexmilitarysupport.com.

Any serving military personnel and veterans are advised to contact info@essexmilitarysupport.com for special tickets.

Excellent.

Wish the only flying mosquito would make the trip over from the States. A superb machine.

Fantastic, just goes to show how easy it is, with the right approach, it is to have both an airshow as well as a ground show...

Air show? Southend is an air show, this is just a few free flybys that last no more than a minute or so. Air show buffs like me will drive over there and watch them for free outside. Barleylands Bootfair is on Sunday and parking is free as well save yourself 4 quid if its only the flypasts you are going for.

What's going ahead, not an air show just a pretend armed forces day that the public have to pay to see? Since when have the public had to pay to see and show respect for our armed forces? Only in Essex could some muppet be allowed to commercialise and profit from armed forces day celebrations a week before Armed Forces Day itself.

Veterans are 'BRAVE', that's why they don't like civvies making money off the backs of armed forces. Not me that needs help if you can't understand that chum!

WW2 Veterans get in free with this event because they are part of the show. Present day serving regs and veteran visitors are being made to pay to attend. You think that's fair do you on todays Veterans and their families? If you haven't served, pipe down. If you have, you've forgotten what the armed forces community stand for and haven't a clue.

It is a commemoration of the events that took place 100 years ago and this event will be well covered by Armed Forces Charities who will no doubt benefit from it.
