A MOTORCYLIST who became trapped in a central reservation barrier after being thrown from his bike is in a stable condition in hospital.

The Southend man, who is in his 20s, sustained multiple fractures to his limbs as well as a head injury after losing control of the green Kawasaki motorbike on Queensway, Southend, at about 1pm on Sunday.

Firefighters had to cut the man free from the central reservation after the crash.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene before being wheeled on a stretcher to Warrior Square, where he was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

The accident occurred beneath the roundabout connecting Southchurch Road and Sutton Road and the road was closed by police.

Workmen carried out repairs to the barrier overnight and throughout the day today.

The pedestrian underpass and an overhead pedestrian bridge were closed by police following the incident, but were opened once the casualty had left the scene.

The man had been travelling towards Southend when the accident occurred.
