A woman has sustained serious injuries after being trapped in her car

First published in Local News by

A WOMAN has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after being involved in a crash with a police car.

Roads leading to and from Sadlers Farm roundabout were closed following the collision at the junction of Canvey Way between a silver Audi A3 and a marked police BMW 530, which was responding to a call with sirens and lights, at about about 1pm.

The woman, who was driving the Audi, sustained serious leg and chest injuries after becoming trapped in the wreckage and was taken to Basildon Hospital, where she was described as being in a stable condition.

Members of the Fire Brigades Union in Essex were on strike but two working fire crews attended the scene and used two sets of cutting equipment to get the woman out of the car by 2.15pm.

She was then left in the care of two ambulances crews and two East of England Ambulance officers, who also treated other casualties for minor injuries.

The woman’s partner was uninjured while their five-year-old daughter, who was a back seat passenger, sustained minor neck injuries and was treated at the scene.

The two male officers suffered minor injuries, which were treated by paramedics at the scene.

A police spokesman said: “An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“At this stage, it is known that the police vehicle had its emergency lights and tones activated and was responding to an ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) activation on a vehicle.

“The intersection is expected to remain closed until teatime until the scene enquiries are completed and debris cleared away.

“As a result, motorists are advised to find alternative routes.”

Anyone with information in connection with this road crash is urged to contact Essex Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01245 240590 or email collisionappeal@essex.pnn.police.uk

High time the law was changed, to make using a device as punishable as drink driving, with statutory bans, not piffling fines, start taking peoples licences, and those people losing their livelihoods will soon bring about a drastic drop in road accidents.
This isn't on the same track as not wearing a seatbelt, you want to die ? jog on, but use a phone and suffer the consequences.

I am really disgusted by the comments on here. Do any of you live locally and were any of you there today to see where it actually happened? I was!!

When you are waiting at the lights to go across onto (or off of) Canvey Way, you cannot see round the roundabout. You rely on the lights. It is called a 'Hamburger junction'.

I have sat there and heard sirens but you cannot see where they are coming from. The police car jumped the lights (at speed) as he was in a chase, and hit the poor woman already on the roundabout.

Comments like "pull over" are impossible to do on Sadlers Farm at the Canvey Way junction when the car is speeding towards you!

Please do not make comments if you have no idea what actually happened.

If you are on a round a bout where do you pull over plus you've got to be able to see where the emergency vehicle is.
So you pull over no matter what causing others to block others getting in the way. You should see what some drivers do they have no idea what to do to help the emergency vehicle through.

I agree with you Caroljb the slip road off canvey way is dangerously short, you have to rely on the lights changing to join the road and even have to slow down to a complete stop at times because there is not time for other drivers to let you in. I also sympathise with the sirens, just the other day I was at cookoo corner driving towards the A127 off the roundabout and out of nowhere an ambulance zoomed in front of me, the siren went on there and then so there was no warning I had to slam on the break. It's also very difficult to see where police or ambulance cars are when you do hear them in the day and I have been tooted by other impatient drivers just for slowing down to look and realising they are not actually behind me. I cannot believe the way people drive these days. The road is closed off at waterside canvey tonight too after another accident but it's no wonder with the driving that goes on out there. I wish all involved in theses crashes a full recovery and wish their families well.

Well done Caroljb for actually talking some sense. Some of these other posters must live in some sort of cloud cuckoo land. I saw the aftermath of this accident and the state of the Audi was horrific. Glad to hear that nobody was killed, and I hope all involved make a full recovery.

If, as you say, the police car went through a red light and collided with the Audi, then the police driver will be at fault. Contrary to popular belief, police cars with their lights and sirens on are not allowed to treat a red light as a green - they have to treat it as a 'Give Way'. Therefore if someone is already on the junction then they must wait until it is safe to proceed.

That part of the Sadlers junction (where traffic to & from Canvey cuts across the roundabout) is a very poor design, made worse by too many trees and bushes restricting visibility.

And don't get me started on that poxy bootsale...

I absolutely agree with caroljb

Sesibollox - You obviously do not know this roundabout. It has a lane from the A13 from Basildon direction which goes straight over part of the roundabout so that people can still turn right (against the normal flow of a roundabout) onto Canvey Way.
There have been many accidents and near misses since Sadlers roundabout was changed from the old system and this one route seems to cause many problems particularly with people who haven't used this roundabout since the mini roundabouts around it were taken off and they think they can still turn right to go towards Southend.

Please do not make comments if you have no idea what actually happened.
If you can hear sirens but not see anything, then you need to give maximum attention to finding out where they are, and not commit to a manoeuvre until you are sure it's safe to do so.
The Police car doesn't just appear from two yards away, and visibility on that roundabout isn't that bad.
And yes, I do live locally and travel across it twice every day, more times if I'm really unlucky.
Having said that I do hope she is ok though.

Firstly many thanks for taking the time to read my valuable posts, secondly, that halfwits paradise, known as the Sadlers boot sale, is by all accounts pretty ropey. But it does serve a portion of the population, which without putting a finer point on them, like ropey boot sales.

Well done Caroljb for putting everything into prospective . There are some absolutely mindless people around who have no compassion at all for all those that were involved in this most unfortunate appalling incident.
Lets not cast stones at who was doing what when it happened , lets think of the poor little 5 year old girl who I saw wrapped in a jacket watching all the horrifying scene around her knowing that she could not cuddle her mum because she was scared but a police woman instead as her mum was being cut out of a police car and her daddy was clearly with her mummy .
(Alledgy ) I have been told her mum has since died ,however this has not been confirmed yet .
The poor officers in the police car were only doing there job , the police officers are fully trained in road pursuits however we the general public are not.
I have been driving for over 25 years and still panic when I hear blues and twos ...which I am sure this lady did . Police are prepared for quick response whereas we are not .
The sadlers farm roundabout is absolutely notorious for accidents and with the council not having cut the grass on the roundabout for a considerable amount of time it clearly obscured drivers views also of what was coming around the roundabout.
I was five cars behind and witnessed this accident and had comfort knowing that my four year old granddaughter and husband were safely in the car .however I have no comfort or peace in knowing what that five year old little girl ,her dad and mum are going through .
I do feel for the police officers and this is truly not a biased post it's just that I am aware that they had minor injuries luckily and are ok apart from the absolute shock and trauma they must be going through.
Everyone is traumatised by this and for the posts on here that are senseless and uncaring think again as you never know what the day is going to bring and hopefully never will ...
Thoughts and love to anyone involved reading this ........

They don't seem to care about innocent people. Your the reason for accidents. 'I have been driving for 25 years and still panic when I hear blues and twos'. Drivers that panic are the main cause for accidents.

When I see an emergency vehicle in a emergency, I keep up with it and get through all the traffic! Its brilliant.

When me and my mates are bored, we usually go out for a drive or a race down the A13 late at night. We hit a whopping 140mph. Pretty cool to be honest.

I bet your one of those drivers that panic at everything, and drive below the speed limit.

Missy Jane, I'm so sorry you had to witness the terrible accident and know all the images will stay with you for a very long time ;(
As for the evil poster who told me shut my mouth, and said it was a shame the police officers weren't badly injured, well I hope he gets his just desserts. You know he also said it was worth that little girl (on another story) getting brain damage so that the parents could get a new house and car with the compensation money ;((( what normal person would say that? I am shocked that the newspaper lets him say all these things and hope he gets reported like someone did on twitter for making nasty tweets. Then we can all see who he is, and will take comfort in the knowledge that all his friends and family know what he's really like too, and that is "EVIL"

Dear KtLou 12,

I am so so glad and relieved for all involved that the mum is recovering and well.
Oh I have never been so glad to have been wrong .
I run a shop and my customers were all talking about it and told me ..
I really was devastated as I just kept seeing the beautiful little girl with the policewoman and her poor mum .
I said that they had it wrong she was ok but still they insisted they had read it !
Well I couldn't find anything in the paper so I e mailed the police out of sheer concern as a mother and grandmother myself.
I did not hear anything and Wednesday I was told by someone that attended the accident in a professional capacity.
Well I am overjoyed ...
I thank you for making me right .
Also Lexygirl thank you for your kind comments .
I know I was not going to write any mores comments on this post but hearing the news from Ktlou12 I just had to acknowledge this is was to mportant not to .
Regards
Missy Jane
