A WOMAN has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after being involved in a crash with a police car.

Roads leading to and from Sadlers Farm roundabout were closed following the collision at the junction of Canvey Way between a silver Audi A3 and a marked police BMW 530, which was responding to a call with sirens and lights, at about about 1pm.

The woman, who was driving the Audi, sustained serious leg and chest injuries after becoming trapped in the wreckage and was taken to Basildon Hospital, where she was described as being in a stable condition.

Members of the Fire Brigades Union in Essex were on strike but two working fire crews attended the scene and used two sets of cutting equipment to get the woman out of the car by 2.15pm.

She was then left in the care of two ambulances crews and two East of England Ambulance officers, who also treated other casualties for minor injuries.

The woman’s partner was uninjured while their five-year-old daughter, who was a back seat passenger, sustained minor neck injuries and was treated at the scene.

The two male officers suffered minor injuries, which were treated by paramedics at the scene.

A police spokesman said: “An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“At this stage, it is known that the police vehicle had its emergency lights and tones activated and was responding to an ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) activation on a vehicle.

“The intersection is expected to remain closed until teatime until the scene enquiries are completed and debris cleared away.

“As a result, motorists are advised to find alternative routes.”
