FOUR fast food joints look set to be part of Lakeside shopping centre’s £9million food court revamp.

Burger bar Five Guys, which opened its first UK restaurant in Covent Garden last July, will be coming to the soon-to-be expanded floor.

Described by the Hamburger Me blog as garnering “immediate cult status” in London, the chain has a “Fanatics” section on its website and was described by business magazine Forbes as America’s fastest growing restaurant in 2012.

It is the chain’s first Essex branch – the nearest one is at the Bluewater Shopping Centre, Kent.

Joining it will be the Rhythm Kitchen – the West Indian restaurant’s second UK outlet.

Former hotel chef and TV chef Delroy Dixon ploughed his life savings into the first at Westfield shopping centre, Stratford, and said he decided to expand into Thurrock after being badgered by his Essex customers.

As well as chicken, the kitchen serves barbecue ribs and braised oxtail, all Caribbean fare inspired by his West Indian mother’s cooking.

He said: “Our portions are big and Caribbean food is completely underrepresented in shopping centres and High Streets, so Rhythm Kitchen is a nice alternative to have.”

Mexican restaurant Tortilla is keen on coming too after applying to Thurrock Council for an alcohol licence, while chicken chain Nando’s looks set to open its third restaurant at the shopping centre.
