A MAN has been told he may lose his leg after his moped was involved in a collision with a car.

Matthew Farmer, 26, of Morris Close, Great Wakering, suffered terrible leg injuries after the crash with a red Ford Fiesta outside the Co-op, in Great Wakering High Street.

Mr Farmer is facing six months in a wheelchair after breaking his knee and shin, and fracturing his leg in three places.

Shocked passers-by tended to Mr Farmer as he lay on the ground with bones in his leg exposed.

One woman was said to have fainted at the sight of his injuries, which others described as horrific’.

Mr Farmer said: “I was thrown to the other side of the road.

“I will be inawheelchair for six months. They’ve said there is a chance of infection and I could lose my leg if it doesn’t heal correctly.”

Surgeons at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, will continue to work on his legs in the coming months in an effort to get him walking again.

But Mr Farmer, a delivery driver and children’s entertainer, said the accident had made him aware of the need for drivers to be extracareful on the roads.

He added: “I had never had a crash before. People need to be aware and be safe and give themselves that extra distance.

“Be prepared for anyone to come out at any moment.”

Police are still investigating the accident, at 5.30pm on Sunday, July 13, and have appeared for witnesses to get in touch.

They should dial 101 and ask to speak to Sgt Mark Yorke-Wade or PC Neil Coalbran of the Laindon response and patrol unit
