THE annual Old Leigh Regatta has been cancelled due to a lack of volunteers.

Scheduled for the weekend of the September 13 and 14, the Regatta was a charity event held to raise funds for the Leigh scout community.

Old Leigh High Street closed each year for the event, which included the annual scout pentathlon, live music, morris dancing and cockle eating competitions.

The Echo has been told by organisers this year's event has been shelved due to a lack of people coming forward to help out.

A friend of mine was asked to join the committee, she agreed but never heard anything. I had told her that I would volunteer for a stall or something but she never got the chance to participate.

I follow the regatta team on Facebook and there were no problems noted on there. Twitter also has some Leigh community pages and none of them mentioned any issues. People may have come forward if they knew the committee was struggling.

Very sad and frustrating.

That's part of what makes it a fun atmosphere in my opinion!

I think it's a real shame it's been cancelled, it must affect local traders' takings being an established annual event. I've had some really good times there over the years, seen good bands and enjoyed wandering around. Kids usually love it too. Where's the Community Spirit gone?!

As David A-mess (MP) thinks Southend is a second capital city of culture I feel sue he would make a generous donation and help out at this event, anything that supports hsi view of the area!

As for volunteers ... advertise and they will come flooding in!

Very disappointing when annual events are cancelled as they only happen once a year. I,d planned to sail my life size replica of the Cutty Sark made entirely with lolly sticks down Leigh Broadway but the tide was out! But console yourselves with a new competition... how to get a drink from the Peter Boat in under 30 minutes. Winner wins...a drink from the Oyster Smack...another 30 minutes!.

Oh my heart bleeds for you, not being able to park and churn up our kerbsides and lovely old town just so you can come here for 1 day, make a mess, stink up the place then leave.

People who don't live within walking distance of this small, local and community-minded event should stay away.

Meanwhile you can't even buy a book
