Bumper pay packets for "town hall tycoons"

DOZENS of public servants in Essex are earning six figure salaries with huge pension contributions on top.

Essex County Council has more than 50 staff earning a basic salary of more than £100,000.

This does not include the dozens earning bumper pay packets at schools or those whose bonuses, expenses or pension contributions, paid for out of the public purse, tips them into the six figure bracket.

County Hall justified the salaries claiming they need to pay for the best

The figures were released by the Taxpayers’ Alliance.

More than 2,000 council workers break the six figure barrier, including four at Colchester Council.

Jonathan Isaby, Chief Executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "It is good news the number of senior council staff making more than £100,000 a year is falling, although that may only be because many authorities have finished paying eye-watering redundancy bills.

"Sadly, too many local authorities are still increasing the number of highly paid staff on their payroll.

"It's particularly galling in places where councils are pleading poverty and demanding more and more in Council Tax.

"Taxpayers expect their council to be filling potholes, not pay packets.

"Many rank-and-file staff in local councils will be equally appalled - at a time when councils across the country are freezing pay, it appears the money they're saving is being used to line the pockets of town hall tycoons."

A spokesman for Essex County Council said: “Essex County Council is one of the largest local authorities in the country with an annual budget of almost £2 billion. It is responsible for vital services supporting every member of the community throughout their lives.

“It is imperative, especially at time when the council is having to radically change the way it works that we have talented and experienced people leading the organisation. To ensure we are able to attract and retain the services of these people we obviously need to pay competitive salaries.”

The top earner at County Hall remains CHief Executive Joanna Killian.

She is slipping down the list of top earners but still picked up more than £235,000 last year, including pension contributions.

What a sad piece of churnalism this is - just taking the TPA's press release and printing it. Did any journalist ask how much people like Jonathan Isaby are paid, or how much public money they waste with their continual FOI request fishing expeditions? And why not ask where the TPA gets its money from and about its connections to the hard right of the Tory Party?

Oh sorry, that'd involve doing some actual journalism, and it's much harder than cut and pasting something in to fill a bit of space.

Most of these so called Public Sector pen pusher geniuses, cannot get work in the Private Sector.
They are type cast in the second rate wannabe class to the big boys.
Some of them that sit on boards as Trust reps, are the biggest C*n Individuals on two feet. The Tax scams that they run to hide their salaries are unreal.
Back to this bunch, it has now become a runaway train out of control, you lead by example, not by sipping champagne with House Of Lords Bovine Farmers and coining in nearly a £250,000 a year.
S.A.S. Commanders do not even get paid that kind of money.

I love the comment 'responsible for vital services supporting every member of the community throughout their lives'. What a joke! I suppose that means bin collections and they cannot even do that right. I begrudge paying Council Tax because all its for is paying this lot their extortionate salaries and gold-plated pensions along with their minions perks. Why do you think its a criminal offence not to pay your Council Tax..its to protect the trough from which they feed. Actual council-run services in my experience are rubbish.

Central Govenment needs to have the guts and cap all public service salaries at a sensible level along with sensible pension levels. It will then mean that these executives would be working for pride and achievement (ultimately making services a lot better) rather than the big money salaries thrown at them. If these people are the "best" and are poached by the private corporates then so be it. It would, at least, then prove that they are only in it for the money. However, I have never seen any evidence that suggests these people are, indeed, the "best" and I would wager that there are plenty of people who could do a far better job and be happy with half the salary that these current crop of money grabbers are creaming off the tax payer.

Oh my goodness she's off at it again.

Text book lefties -why oh why does she insist on sticking her two pence worth into any posting and turning it into a political rant?

and will someone please explain to me why Kim who does not live in Basildon has such an interest in the borough. Quite disturbing.

BTW - how can a council which had the conservative group in overall control for at the very least a decade until May this year be held back by 'text book lefties?' These text book lefties didn't hold the tories back when they sold Gloucester Park did they? they didn't hold the Tories back when they decided to build on Dry Street, they didnt hold the Tories back when they decided to waste over £750k on PR did they. I really cannnot see how these text book lefties have held back the Tony Ball mafia.

People at the Echo can't you stop this woman from being so utterly unpleasant, she makes herself look sillier with each posting.

Oh dear, yet again we have the old 'I have skimmed past your comments' line.

And of course not one person believes it Kim.

Probably best not to expose yourself to ridcule.

Well said, RU. Best post on this thread. The TPA represents nobody. Thanks for exposing them as a Tory party offshoot.
These so called 'best' (financial vulgar vultures) should not be allowed to start and continue at all. The governments time of making the cut backs for the public to suffer.
Considering the smiles on the Joanna one is a shock to be made and seen.
The comments with the views by RU, Route and Boris are showing to explain well said by what is meant by them precisely too.

Sack the lot. They do b***** all anyway from what I've seen when out and about. Basildon Council in particular has a preponderance of dead wood text book lefties and are the real reason Basildon has been held back in recent years. I hope the new councillors will put them in their proper place soon, particularly estate managers who need their lazy @rses kicked. Either that or make them clear their desks. Put the money saved into decent housing and better environment.

Everyone's a leftie compared to her though.

Yes we have to pay to get the best, just what they said about the top bankers at RBS, Lloyds etc and where did that get us??
Yes the councils are doing a great job, for my £1,300 I get a bin bag taken once a week, street lights which are turned off for the nightly curfew at 12ish, no police within 8 miles during the day longer at night, leisure facilities (pool gym) about 9 miles etc etc. It is nice to consider that via the council tax payments I pay far more into council employees pension funds than my own
