A clutch of new jobs will be created in Southend after a High Street reshuffle.

HMV is moving from its Victoria Centre unit, into another shop in the town’s High Street with Metrobank taking the music retailer’s spot and creating 25 jobs when it opens next year.

HMV will take the place of fashion store USC, which is soon to close. The music store will be in its new home by the end of September.

Metrobank, which is also opening a store in Basildon, claims it will offer a different banking experience to the traditional High Street chains.

A spokesman for the firmsaid: “Metro Bank will bring a customer focused bank to the people and businesses of Southend, which offers the very best in service and convenience.

“This includes stores open seven days a week, 362 days a year, 24-hour online and telephone banking and mobile banking for personal customers.

“Southend is a great community that we can’t wait to become a part of.

“We look forward to being able to bring the banking revolution to local people and businesses.”

The bank will not open until next year however, because of work to fit out the new unit.

HMV is moving at the end of September in what will be the chain’s third High Street re-jig.

It used to be based in Queens Road before taking the old Virgin unit in the Victoria Centre in 2009, when HMV bought out the company.

Southend Business Improvement District chairman Dawn Jeakings said: “We are happy to see more employment in the High Street and Metrobank is another retail offer.

“This is more positive movement for Southend’s High Street.”

Staff at USC told the Echo they did not know when their store was closing down, despite huge banners outside saying all stock must go.

The Echo contacted its parent company, Sports Direct for a comment, but did not get a response.

HMV was also unavailable for comment.

I wonder what "a clutch of new jobs" will actually equate to ? HMV is only moving, so 25 jobs at metrobank minus those lost at USC, no mention of numbers...

Both of these statements are true. 4th location, 3rd move.

What we need to see is a bit more competition. HMV currently holds the monopoly on movie/music sales in the high street (I refuse to include the likes of WHSmith's pitiful little section).

I went into a MetroBank in London... to be fair they are very different from the established High Street banks and will offer something different. And they're not going to pick up a raft of new customers WITHOUT having a branch network. Stop moaning and use your loaf... maybe even pop in and look around!

There is competition. There's an independent record shop down Queens Road. Better spent cash in an indie who can get you what you want in at a better rate than HMV as well. And has more beyond stacks of Katy Perry and One Direction!
