RAILWAYMEN killed during the First World War are being remembered through an online memorial launched by train company c2c.

The website honours the 88 railwaymen who died in battle and their names were also displayed on information boards at London Fenchurch Street station.

The men worked for the London, Tilbury and Southend section of the Midland Railway and lost their lives in the conflict.

Chris Atkinson, c2c spokesman, said: “This has been a poignant project tracing the local railwaymen who fell during the First World War “A lot may have changed in the intervening century, like many of the job titles, some of the station names, and the name of the train operator. But these men provided the local train service, and the respect for them from their modern counterparts remains.”

The online memorial also lists each railwayman’s military rank and unit, and their railway job and place of work. The railway company has also placed a remembrance poppy for each of the fallen the company has been able to trace on the Royal British Legion’s new “Every Man Remembered” database. It has also made a donation of £440 to the Legion, representing £5 for each of the 88 local railwaymen killed in the war.

However, they are still hunting for 22 men who worked for the rail company, but who have not yet been traced.

Mr Atkinson added: “We would still like to hear from anyone who can help us confirm details of more than 20 men who are listed on the Midland War Memorial but we have been unable to trace.

The list was created by cross-referencing the names engraved on the Midland Railway’s war memorial in Derby with the National Railway Museum’s list of the 20,000 workers killed.

The Roll of Honour can be viewed at www.c2conline.co.uk/about-us/c2c-history/warmemorial.
