A BANKER is set to take on the challenge of a lifetime to raise funds for dementia sufferers.

Pat Crace, 55, from Billericay, will trek in the Sahara Desert in scorching heat alongside 34 colleagues.

Staff from Lloyds banks across the country are taking on the 100k trek next month in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.

They have already smashed their team target of £140,000 – with the current total standing at more than £190,000.

Mr Crace, who is manager of the Chelmsford branch, has raised nearly £9,000 himself.

He said: ‘I have had a great time fundraising.

“My wife’s grandmother had dementia and she saw the effect this had on her family and how difficult life was at times.

“I want to make a difference to people living with dementia and their families and that’s why I am taking part in this challenge.”

The money raised will go to a national support programme being rolled out by the Alzheimer’s Society to help dementia sufferers and their carers cope with everyday life and plan for the future. The charity also runs a befriending service, offers financial and legal support and organises activities.

Jeremy Hughes, chief executive of Alzheimer’s Society, said: “We’re delighted by the passion and commitment to our cause shown by Lloyds Banking Group colleagues. Covering that mileage, in that heat, is no easy task and it’s highly commendable.

“There will be over a million people with dementia by 2021, and partnerships like this one with Lloyds Banking Group help us continue our vital work. I wish them all the best in completing the challenge.”
