TWO disabled friends have had their home wrecked by a massive water leak just weeks after an SOS-style makeover.

Hayley Watts, 34, spent months rounding up volunteers and raising cash to completely revamp her brother Glenn Whatling’s home in Middle Cloister, Billericay.

However on Sunday night, less than a month after the work was completed, the water tank ruptured, trashing the home and leaving Glenn and his housemate Roger Hucks homeless.

Hayley, of Alexander Mews, Billericay, said: “To say it is gutting for everyone concerned is a bit of an understatement “Weworked so hard to get the house sorted for them and now it is completely uninhabitable.

“The ceiling has come through in the hall, the floors are ruined, the bathroom is not usable and the boys have lost all their personal possessions in their bedrooms.”

The tank was checked by engineers the day before the incident and an investigation is being carried out to determine exactly what caused the leak.

She added: “My brother is splitting his time between my house and our dad’s, but because he has Downs Syndrome, he is finding it very difficult to understand what has happened and why he is not allowed home.”

The house is jointly owned by the Anvil Trust charity and Swan Housing.

Repairs, which could run in to hundreds of pounds, will be the responsibility of the charity, but Hayley fears it may take it some time to raise the cash.

She is calling on the help of Echo readers.

Hayley said: “Unfortunately the boys did not have contents insurance, so all their personal possessions have gone.

“I would like to raise some money to do what ever is necessary to replace the damaged items and re-do the work.

“If anyone could donate anything it would be wonderful.”

Glenn and Roger moved in to the house ten years ago – giving them the independent living they never thought possible.

But the house began to look tired, so Hayley applied for a community grant from Lloyds Bank and Costa Coffee, collecting donations from businesses and fundraising to give the property a new lease of life.

She drafted in volunteers and spent 24 hours painting, rewiring, plumbing, putting down new floors and installing a new bathroom.
