A SPECIAL school in Benfleet is set to be given the go-ahead to move to a new site.

Glenwood School, in Rushbottom Lane, will move to share a site with neighbouring Montgomery Primary School.

Essex County Council is expected to approve the plan, which will see the school expand from 120 to 210 places, at a cabinet meeting next week.

It is part of a scheme which would see the primary school move to a larger building and the special school move on to the former infant school site.

During a consultation period, the council received 20 comments in favour and two against.

Glenwood School caters for people aged three to 19 with learning difficulties or disabilities.

Headteacher Judith Salter hopes the new school building will be ready by September 2016.

The present building is well-maintained, but a lack of specialist areas limits the standard of care on offer.

A council report said: “The county council believes providing purpose-built accommodation will help to improve the already very high standard of education the school provides.”

The council has allocated £15.6million for the project.

A cabinet meeting will vote on officers’ recommendation to approve the project on Tuesday.
