Experts have removed a bomb found just yards from Wembley Stadium the day before Southend United's play-off final.

A TV studio where filming for Britain's Got Talent is taking place was evacuated yesterday after the bomb was found.

It was found by builders less than 200 yards from the stadium, where the Blues will play tomorrow evening.

Nearby buildings and homes were evacuated as Ministry of Defence bomb disposal teams were called to the scene.

But the Metropolitan Police confirmed this afternoon that the bomb has been removed from the Wembley area.

Detective Chief Superintendent Mickey Gallagher from Brent said: “I recognise the disruption this incident will have had on local communities and am very grateful for the cooperation and understanding we saw.

“Everyone pulled together through this disruption with the local authority, local businesses and community centres providing much needed rest areas and refreshment for those affected.

“I must also thank our courageous soldiers from various Army regiments for working tirelessly for over 24 hours, using their skill and experience to safely bring this incident to its conclusion.”

A Football League spokesman said: "The Sky Bet Football League Play-Off Finals remain unaffected and there is no risk to the weekend’s fixtures as it stands."
