A COUNCILLOR has called for speed restrictions in a Thorpe Bay street after another serious crash.

David Garston, Tory councillor for Southchurch ward, spoke out after a woman lost control of a silver Rover and hit a tree in the central reservation of Thorpe Hall Avenue.

The crash comes just two weeks after a woman was left with life-threatening injuries after driving a Bentley into a tree in the same road.

Mr Garston, who was at the scene of the latest collision, wants something done to curb the speed of drivers in the road.

He said: “The car hit the tree in almost the same location as the last one.

“The woman was shaken up, but I don’t think she was badly hurt. It looked like someone had brought a chair out for her to sit on.

“I am going to refer the matter to the traffic and parking working party.

“I believe this is down to speed. I think the road needs some sort of traffic calming measure.”

The latest crash happened on Friday and saw the woman receive treatment by paramedics at the scene before being taken to Southend Hospital suffering from minor injuries.

Builder Peter Hubbard, who was working on a house nearby, helped at the scene by filling buckets with water to put out a fire beneath the car.

He said: “I was up a ladder at the time so didn’t actually see it happen, just the aftermath.

“The woman came out of a side road and lost control and ploughed into the tree.

“She managed to jump out, but a fire had started under the car.

“There were lots of people just standing about looking so me and my workmate filled up some buckets and chucked them at the fire.

“It was only 100 yards or so away from where a car hit a tree before.”

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “Wewere called just after 9am. We sent a rapid response vehicle within five minutes and an ambulance shortly afterwards.

“A woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries.”
