FIREFIGHTERS were called to a car fire near Pitsea flyover, this morning.

The blaze, cause unknown, was reported at about 10am before crews from Basildon, Rayleigh and Orsett fought back the flames.

Eyewitness James Kerin, a 31-year-old DJ from Littlebury Green, Basildon, described the heat as "intense."

He said: "I was driving towards the Pitsea flyover when I saw thick black smoke.

"It soon become apparent a car was on fire.

"All the traffic slowed to pass the burning car.

"The heat from the fire was intense.

"As soon as I passed I called the fire brigade."

Wearing breathing apparatus, crews used one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire by about 10.20am.
