A TRAIN company is introducing new energy saving lights at various station.

National Express train operator c2c has launched an energy-saving programme at its stations which will save enough electricity to power the entire c2c train fleet for a whole week.

c2c is installing new LED lighting at all 26 stations on the route, which will provide brighter light while using less energy.

Each light will also be fitted with intelligent control sensors, which automatically switch the light off when there is no-one around or as soon as there is sufficient daylight.

The new lighting programme will save an estimated 1.2mkWh every year, which is the equivalent of over 700 tonnes of CO2.

This provides enough energy to power c2c’s trains for more than 100,000 miles, or 2,500 journeys – which is the number of train services c2c runs in one entire week.

c2c Managing Director Julian Drury said: “These new LED lights provide the ideal combination of a bright and safe station environment with reduced light pollution, lower energy consumption and less waste.

"The lights are now in place at more than half of our stations, and we’ll have finished the whole programme so that everyone can enjoy the benefits long before the clocks go back in October.”
