SCHOOLCHILDREN showed off their scientific skills and creative talents as part of a design and technology day.

Pupils at West Leigh Junior School, in Ronald Hill Grove, Leigh, spent the day trying to design an aerodynamic vehicle and building models of their ideas in the classroom. They were later treated to an exciting demonstration from an aerodynamic expert from Bloodhound SSC, a team of scientists and engineers trying to design and build a car that will break the 1,000mph barrier and set a new world land speed record.

Andy Higgs, from Bloodhound SSC, was very impressed with the children’s ideas and work throughout the day.

After sharing his knowledge of aerodynamics, enthusiasm was bubbling throughout the day across the school. Children competed in teams to produce the fastest cars by applying what they had learned.

Teacher and leader of the design and technology club, Adam Loveridge, said: “It was an overwhelming success with many children and staff members praising the day.

“There was fantastic questioning from children across the school.

“The winners from each class will be given an opportunity to take this work further with rocket powered cars during the upcoming months as a part of the school’s design and technology club.”
