BASILDON Council staff have shown their support for a transgender community group by selling rainbow-themed sweet treats.

The workers handed over £185 to Transpire, which was set up by police officer Gina Denham.

Terri Sargent, councillor for the environment and community, said: “It was lovely to see so many people take the time and effort to bake cakes to bring in for the sale.

“We hope that this donation helps this continue to provide invaluable support.”

Ms Denham, who was born male but decided to live life as a woman in November 2014, said: “The money will really help Transpire have financial resilience to provide support to our membership. Transpire will use the donations to increase confidence and reduce feelings of isolation.”
