THE manager of one of Essex’s greatest bands will be speaking at an event on Canvey this afternoon.

Chris Fenwick, manager of Canvey legends Dr Feelgood, will host an afternoon presentation at the Canvey War Memorial Hall, in High Street, titled Canvey Man: Tales of His Journey.

The hour-long talk will include memories from Mr Fenwick’s upbringing in Essex as well focusing on some of Dr Feelgood’s exploits and his favourite times from his career, which spans 43 years.

Speaking about the presentation, Mr Fenwick said: “I am a Canvey-born guy and the Canvey History Society asked me to give a presentation about my life. At 19 I started to manage Dr Feelgood and 43 years later we are still touring.”

The band still perform around 120 shows a year and have travelled all over the world playing hits including Milk and Alcohol, Roxette and Back in the Night.

He spoke about how he helped organise Dr Feelgood’s first tour which took place in Holland and said: “I was at acting school in London, I went to a wedding and spoke to a DJ who had also been invited. He was looking for a band to do a couple of shows in Holland, I was not managing Dr Feelgood but I hung around with them a lot at the time, so I said I knew just the band.”

The tour in 1972 was the beginning of Mr Fenwick’s involvement with Dr Feelgood.

Among other stories, Mr Fenwick will discuss a few touring scrapes in Switzerland on his 60th birthday. He said: “Being the manager of a rock band, these sorts of things happen but I have had the best job in the world bar none this past 40 years.”

Mr Fenwick feels that Dr Feelgood are a very different band to the one that started in the Seventies, especially since the death of singer Lee Brilleaux and departure of Wilko, but they remain as popular as ever.

The talk will start at 2:15pm today and entry is £2.50.
