CONCERNED councillors are urging residents and visitors to park considerately in order to prevent continuing problems for motorists and pedestrians.

Canvey Independent councillor Barry Palmer said: “There’s always a problem with parking on the island for one simple reason and that is because the roads are not designed for the number of vehicles on the road.

“All new properties have to have an off road parking facility.

“But as a result, that means there’s less parking facilities on the roads, which means it’s a double edged sword.

“Plenty of roads are very narrow but most people park sensibly to ensure that other vehicles can pass safely. Unfortunately, there are also those who do not.

“In places like London they allow pavement parking by marking half of the parking space onto the pavement.

“It’s supposed to be two wheels on, two wheels off but people abuse it. The idea is to accommodate everyone by leaving enough room for vehicles and enough room for pedestrians.

“The pavements on Canvey aren’t very wide either, so it’s difficult to know how to allow for it.

“I really don’t know the answer but it’s not going to get any better with all the new building work, as more houses means more cars.”

One social media user said It would be nice to see the council “do away” with the grass verges and instead make them pavements and parking bays “like they’ve done in Mornington Road”.

He added it could also lead to a reduction in council tax as there wouldn’t be a need to cut grass verges.

Canvey Independent councillor Alan Acott said: “It’s not illegal to park at the side of the road providing other vehicles can still pass through safely.

He added: “The only reason a ticket should be issued is if there’s double yellow lines.”

Another social media user suggested that the number of residents putting traffic cones and bins outside their houses to stop members of the public parking there is another factor which is causing issues for residents and visitors to the area, especially with parking at a premium.
