Commuters and residents are working together to put an end to the on-going battle of pavement parking outside Basildon’s train station.

People have been venting their frustrations online about having to squeeze between vehicles or walk around multiple cars as they exit the station, in Station Way, Basildon.

Parking on the pavement has even led to engineers repairing damage to the paths.

A 32-year-old from Basildon, who did not want to be named, said: “I had my son in his pram so I had to go around the back of the cars and then squeeze in between the tree and a wall to get past.

“Earlier in the year I was walking along that path with my son in his pram and the path was all broken up, the front wheels of his pram went down the gap in the path and the pram flipped over and I fell over.

“Thankfully I had his hood up on the pram to shield his face from the sun otherwise he would have hit his head on the pavement.”

The woman reported it to Essex County Council.

Lee Cocker, from Basildon, said that he has been “fighting the parking issues” for the last few months.

He said: “I commute to London for work and use Basildon station daily.

“The underpass which I used near the station was flooded about two to three months ago and the pavement near the station was breaking due to the cars parking on it. Nobody was doing anything about either issue.”

Mr Cocker complained to both Basildon Council and Essex County Council on Twitter.

He said: “Essex County Council then said to me on Twitter the Trafford House parking is an issue for the Essex Parking Partnership so I contacted them and they said no it’s an issue for Essex County Council.”

After Mr Cocker shared a photo of the email response from the authorities on Twitter, builders visited the area and tarmacked the broken pavement slabs and confirmed a panel would be set up to review the situation.

A spokesperson for Essex Highways said: “Essex Highways’ engineers repaired various damage to the roadway and pavements here on September 19. The Basildon Local Highways Panel is considering longer-term solutions to the overall problem. The panel met yesterday.”

Two weeks on from Mr Cocker’s social media campaign and cars are still parking on the pavement.

A spokesman for South Essex Parking Partnership said: “We are currently assessing the parking situation outside Trafford House.”
