Residents are concerned over the future of a popular bar, which they fear is closing down.

Varsity Bar, in Maitland House, Warrior Square, Southend, was reportedly last seen open last weekend.

The Echo spoke to Pat Walker, who is the agent for Varsity Bar. He said the owners have not confirmed with him what to do with their lease. He also confirmed the bar is not up for sale.

Mike Gray, from Dedman Gray real estate agents, said it would be a shame if Varsity Bar were to shut.

He said: “The bar was seen open last weekend, and it was a very busy weekend too. The doors have been closed during the course of this week.

“As I understand, they have always focused their business in university towns. We have South Essex College and Essex University has a campus here too. Lots of students go to the bar.

“It would be great to see it continue its business here. However, if the bar is closing I hope to see a similar trade operating here.

“I remember when Mayhem Nightclub, which was also in Warrior Square, closed last year.”

Councillor Ann Holland, responsible for culture, tourism and economy, said: “If Varsity Bar is truly shutting, any business that’s closing down is really sad, and a big loss for the borough.

“It would especially be disappointing for students who will miss it very much.

“For any businesses that are closing down, we work with Southend Bid to encourage more businesses to come to our town.

“Let’s hope and be positive that it is not true. And if owners are still deciding what to do with their lease, I hope they work something out. Losing a popular bar like Varsity would be a big loss.

“Warrior Square has always been a busy area, it contributes highly to our night time economy.”

Councillor Mark Flewitt, representing St Laurence, said: “If the news is true, it would be a terrible shame. Varsity is a nice and thriving place for young people to hang out.

“If the bar does go, I hope a similar business will take over to help drive the night time economy for the borough.”
