A fire broke in a house in what is believed to be a blaze started by a cigarette.

Three fire engines were called to the scene early this morning at 1.35am.

Three people were safely evacuated from their home after being alerted by a battery-operated smoke alarm.

The fire broke out in a bedroom on the property's first floor, allowing the occupants to escape the property before it became more serious.

When crews arrived, they reported the bedroom was completely on fire.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire by 2.20am.

The bedroom has been completely destroyed and the home has been left uninhabitable due to severe smoke damage.

One of the occupants has been taken to hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is believed to be smoking-related and has been recorded as accidental.
