From the post room to parks, housing to health and safety, the hundreds of vital services of Basildon Council will be brought to life when councillors and staff take part in a tweetathon.

The council officials will be among thousands nationwide on Tuesday to tweet using the hashtag #OurDay to give residents an insight into the hundreds of jobs councils do every day, from collecting rubbish and cutting grass, to supporting vulnerable people.

By the end of last year’s #OurDay, more than 9,000 Twitter accounts had participated, and the hashtag trended at number one on Twitter for most of the day. The initiative has been organised by the Local Government Association, which represents councils in England and Wales.

Councillor Gavin Callaghan, Basildon Council’s chairman of the policy and resources committee, said: “#OurDay is a chance to reflect on 24 hours in the life of Basildon Council and show residents what council officers are doing every day to improve their lives. So much hard work goes on behind the scenes and this is our chance to shine a light on our dedicated workforce.”
