A 21-year-old tragically died in her own home while seven months pregnant with a baby boy.

Charlie Davis was found dead at her home in Basildon on July 23 after her family grew concerned when they had not heard from her for several days.

During her inquest on Friday, Essex Coroner’s Court heard that Charlie’s sister rushed to her home but could not get inside.

Emergency services were called, who broke down the front door, but sadly found the young woman dead in her bathroom.

Although heavily pregnant, it was ruled her death had no relation to her going into labour, but a more specific reasoning could not be found.

Pathologist, Dr Simi George, who specialises in maternal death at St Thomas’s Hospital in London, initially gave an unascertained death conclusion.

She said: “I was not able to give a cause of death.

“It was clear from my examination that she was not in labour, her cervix were closed and her uterus remained high.

“This was not a death related to labour.”

Several options were put forward to explain Charlie’s death, including sudden death syndrome which could have been brought on by her epilepsy, or heart conditions, including an irregular heartbeat, which can be brought on by pregnancy, but none could be confirmed.

There was no evidence to suggest that Charlie had suffered any form of trauma and her body was free of any illicit drugs.

Dr George added: “In my opinion, based on the balance of evidence, there is nothing unnatural about this death and I would be happy to have this registered as a natural cause of death.”

Caroline Beasley-Murray, Essex senior coroner, said to Charlie’s family: “She was clearly much loved by you all and I would again like to express my greatest sympathy to you.

“You have had the ordeal of being in this inquest, and you handled that with the greatest dignity.

“I hope you will be able to look back at the happy memories you have with her.”

Mrs Beasley-Murray recorded a natural cause of death.
