New homes built inside of a much loved old pub have finally gone on the market for sale.

Two properties inside the King Canute pub in Canvey Road have been listed on Rightmove, two years after the pub was boarded up and readied for redevelopment.

The regeneration of the former pub will see two three-bedroom houses, a two-bedroom and three-bedroom flat as well as a Co-op created on the site.

Despite only being in its early stages, enquiries for the new flats are growing very quickly.

Charlotte, an agent from Premier Estates, who are dealing with the King Canute properties, said: “There has been a lot of interest in the properties.

“Technically they are not on the market yet, but they will be officially soon.

“By the time the building work is ready, we should have all the flats and houses bought and paid for.”

The pub has been a landmark on Canvey for about 150 years. When it closed in 2014 many residents and councillors worked to maintain the building.

Robert Palmer, 49 of Marine Avenue, Canvey, is hopeful the redevelopment will give the building a new purpose. He said: “A lot of people like the Canute for what it was and people are talking in the area about overbuilding on the island anyway and they are turning a treasured property into more housing, so it is a weird situation. The fact is it is better than leaving the place to decay and fall into disrepair.

“Having been inside it when it got closed down, it was not in any condition to have anything else done with it back then.

“If it creates something that looks good on the street and provides a service for a community, that’s great.”
