SALVATION Army volunteers got their hands dirty working to revamp a graveyard.
A team from of the church organisation's Hadleigh training centre toiled for hours to transform and remodel the graveyard at St John's Church, Southend.
The church, on the top of Pier Hill, has enjoyed a £1million refurbishment over the past six years. The volunteers created new seats and pergolas in the churchyard as part of the second phase of the project.
The Rev Stephen Burdett explained the church wanted to create an open space in the churchyard for people to relax and eat their lunch in the summer.
He said the work - partly funded by the Cory Environmental Trust - would involve laying three headstones down, but the graves themselves would not be disturbed.
