VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help spruce up Chalkwell Beach.

The beach will get a thorough clean on September 21 from 3pm as part of the Marine Conservation Society’s annual Beachwatch litter survey and clean up.

According to the society, coastline litter is not only unsightly but a threat to aquatic life.

Nationwide, more than 170 species of marine wildlife, including seabirds and whales, have been mistaking marine litter for food, resulting in starvation, poisoning and fatal stomach blockages.

Plastic packaging and discarded fishing nets can also injure and drown marine wildlife, including seals and dolphins.

Anyone wanting to take part in the Chalkwell event should call Tracy Cutting, from Scuba and Watersports Marine Training Trust, on 01268 270171, or e-mail essexdiveclub@hotmail.co.uk Alternatively, phone the society’s litter team on 01989 567807.
