CASTLE Point MP Bob Spink was involved in an extraordinary Commons clash with Tory heavyweight David Davies.

Former front-bencher Mr Davies physically grappled with Dr Spink in the Commons in the heat of the debate about the police search of fellow Conservative Damien Green’s Parliamentary office.

The incident came as Dr Spink sought to defend the independence of the police after criticism they were heavy-handed with their investigation.

Dr Spink told MPs: “It sometimes helps if we allow the police to do their job without interference, pressure, bullying or intimidation.”

At this point, Mr Davies and fellow Tory Brian Binley tried to drag Dr Spink back to his seat – provoking a mixture of laughter and derision in the packed house, with one MP shouting: “Bob, do an Arsenal penalty area dive!”

Speaking afterwards, Dr Spink, who quit the Tories in March to join UKIP, said: “These are two decent MPs who just got a bit excited.

“They’ll learn from their subsequent embarrassment and listen to the arguments in future.”
