Youngsters make their mark on future of our town

A COMMUNITY art wall project in Southend’s High Street gave people the chance to explore their ideas of how Southend could look in 2020.

The graffiti wall was organised by South East Essex College, as part of Southend Festival.

One side was taken up with how youngsters imagined the town will look in the future, and the other side was given a futuristic theme by art students, street artist Toska, and members of the public who took a turn with spray cans and paintbrushes.

Toska said: “I wanted to mix a traditional graffiti style with a message for the future of Southend, so at one end I focused on both a vision of how the beach may be redeveloped in the future and at the other end, I wanted to bring in more flowers and greenery.”

My understanding of the law states that graffiti is unsociable and illegal - I expect arrests to be made soon. This is not art in any shape or form but wanton vandalism! Sponsored by our very own 'University' Degrees in basket weaving and ethnic dancing available soon!!

graffiti is an art if done in the right circumstances, this wall is not illegal in any way. in my experience if young people are involved in a project like this is stops young people vandalising it as they have a sense of ownership like the library shutters at Tarpots that was done by young people years ago and no one has touched it since!!

Art can take so many shapes and forms, and it is good that local art students can display their artistic skills. Urban murals have previously been created by young people in St Lukes ward. These have enhanced the street scene, remained in tact, and deterred indiscriminite graffiti.
