ART and media students at South East Essex College’s Thurrock learning campus made a menagerie of papier mache animals as part of an end-of-year project.
Zoo animals, including a penguin, bear, dinosaur, gorilla and lion were featured alongside a host of other work, including advertising and printmaking.
Charlotte Knowlden, 17, from Stanford-le-Hope, said: “The zoo was our final major project and took about four weeks.
“We had to do a lot of research on the animals, so I now have a new found respect for them.”
She added: “A member of staff liked mine – which was based on the look of the characters from the film Happy Feet– and she wanted to buy it.”
Media students added to the show with a poster campaign for a war movie and a promotional video for a local metal band.
They also included a campaign to raise awareness of the issue of bullying and made podcasts.
Joanne McAree, a lecturer in art and design, said: “They showed great determination and all those that visited the exhibition were truly amazed by how well they had done.”
Thurrock Council will be borrowing the Recycled Zoo for the Orsett Show, on Saturday, September 5.
Southend-based South East Essex College opened its Thurrock campus in January.
