Rayleigh gas pipe work on schedule

THE key stage of a project to replace gas pipes, which has snarled up Rayleigh for months, is on course to be completed on time.

Old gas pipes are being dug up and replaced throughout Rayleigh for most of this year, causing delays in Downhall Road and London Road.

The project is earmarked to reach the town centre by the start of the summer holidays, which begin a week on Monday.

Fears have been raised about possible delays to the project, because workmen only recently began digging up the road in London Hill.

But National Grid, which is doing the work with Skanska, said the work was on schedule.

Spokesman Antony Quarrell said: “It’s all going according to plan.

“They will stop what they’re doing at the moment and move to that next stage in the High Street and Bellingham Lane as agreed with the council.

“We are working with the county council.”

Mr Quarrell said that if they do not finish the work in London Hill, contractors could go back and finish it at a later date after the High Street work.

Given what we pay in energy bills they should be working 24/7 to complete them instead of one old bloke leaning on his shovel between 8.30am & 5.00pm looking into the hole.

These gas works actually starting around January 2008 and has been causing chaos in and around Rayleigh, how much longer have we got this disruption I wonder. Sometimes when you think they have finished they come back and dig up another part of the road or leave large holes for weeks on end before filling them back in. Cars and lorries trying to squeeze through silly gaps they leave and mothers trying to push pushchairs around obstacles sometimes having to go into the road which was dangerous. I cannot quite remember what it was like to drive from one side of Rayleigh to the other hassle free.

Once the gas works are all done we will probaly have to go through it all again with the water works. Great fun

I understand these repairs need doing but would agree there seems to little work done at anyone time. Late after noons and weekends there is noone there.Cant they get some extra staff in to get it all done I am sure theres people out there looking for work. ahh more time we spend in traffic the more fuel we use which more money the goverment get on fuel tax.
