THE key stage of a project to replace gas pipes, which has snarled up Rayleigh for months, is on course to be completed on time.
Old gas pipes are being dug up and replaced throughout Rayleigh for most of this year, causing delays in Downhall Road and London Road.
The project is earmarked to reach the town centre by the start of the summer holidays, which begin a week on Monday.
Fears have been raised about possible delays to the project, because workmen only recently began digging up the road in London Hill.
But National Grid, which is doing the work with Skanska, said the work was on schedule.
Spokesman Antony Quarrell said: “It’s all going according to plan.
“They will stop what they’re doing at the moment and move to that next stage in the High Street and Bellingham Lane as agreed with the council.
“We are working with the county council.”
Mr Quarrell said that if they do not finish the work in London Hill, contractors could go back and finish it at a later date after the High Street work.
