UNDERAGE boozing at East Thurrock United FC has led to the club being banned from selling alcohol to non-members.

The move comes after police were called on several occasions to deal with youngsters drinking at the club in Rookery Hill, Corringham.

The licence review was triggered by former Supt Maurice Mason in March, when he was the divisional commander for Basildon and Thurrock.

He said within ten months – from June 2008 to March 2009 – police attended seven separate incidents which usually involved trouble.

He said: “On a number of occasions, police visits have resulted in significant underage drinking being detected.

“The police have a serious concern in this respect. They have a duty to protect children from the harmful effects of alcohol and the subsequent associated antisocial behaviour.”

The council’s licensing sub-committee made the decision to revoke the licence after a mammoth nine-hour hearing.

Members heard how the club’s neighbours had also complained.

One neighbour, who contacted the council, said: “A fire was started in the bushes opposite our house late one night, which was very frightening.

“The groups of drunken teens, who fall out on to our road, start fights and use threatening behaviour towards each other, make our lovely home a nightmare to live in.”

The committee concluded the bar can no longer supply alcohol to the public, although its club licence still allows members to drink there.

Chief Insp Paul Moor said: “I am satisfied with the outcome of this hearing.

“The considerable time taken for the hearing clearly reflects the committee’s willingness to hear all the evidence prior to making its decision.

“We will continue working closely with the council’s licensing department and will clamp down on any licensed premises seen to be flouting the law.”

The club was warned last July when 12 conditions were imposed by the committee.

These included the ban of all 16 to 18 birthday functions, all drinks to be served in non-glassware, such as plastic and waxed paper, and no one under the age of 18 being allowed into the club after 9pm, unless accompanied by someone aged 21 or over.
