MP ANGELA Smith gave an inspiring talk to hundreds of guests at a conference aimed at helping community organisations ride out the recession.

The Basildon and East Thurrock MP, who is also charities minister, spoke during a free event, held at Orsett Hall, in Orsett.

It was organised by Veolia ES Cleanaway Pitsea Marshes Trust, which has funded more than 250 community projects in the past decade, handing out grants worth in excess of £12million.

Mrs Smith opened the conference and chaired the first discussion, after which guests took part in practical workshops tackling topics such as how to develop sustainable building projects, how to manage sports activities, and bringing environmental projects to life.

Mrs Smith said: “It was a fantastic conference, and the hall was absolutely packed.

“Lots of people don’t realise what Government funding is available – we’ve made over £42million available since the recession, and there’s still money in the pot which can help, so I talked about that.

“I was also able to thank some of the people there.

“These volunteers and charity workers give so much to the community.”

Representatives from organisations which have benefited from the trust’s grants also spoke at the event.
