A LANDMARK sun shelter near Chalkwell beach is to be converted into public toilets after councillors backed the scheme.

The building, which is in the style of Greek temple at the bottom of Chalkwell Avenue, Westcliff, also houses a store for the Chalkwell Lifeguards, which will remain in use.

The new toilets will have unisex cubicles and a mother and baby area.

Richard Brown, Conservative councillor for Chalkwell, said the proposed toilets were a much needed facility and would be welcomed by both residents and visitors.

Ted Lewin, Lib Dem councillor for St Laurence, said he was pleased the council was beginning to recognise the need for public toilets along the seafront.

He added: “I am delighted with this scheme and hope the council will ensure it is in operation by the summer season next year.”
