POWERFUL pensioner Gordon Simcox launched a full-scale retaliation on three teenage burglars.

The 68-year-old ex-boxer wrestled with one, rugby-tackled another, and scared the wits out of the third, as the gang tried to raid his home, in Thisselt Road, Canvey.

Mr Simcox was weeding his front garden when he saw one of the hoody-wearing youths in his living room.

His 32-inch flat screen TV had been unplugged and was sitting on the sofa.

Mr Simcox said: “I didn’t think twice, I just saw red.

“The one in the lounge didn’t see me coming, so I just wrapped my arms around him and wrestled him to the floor. I suppose they thought burgling a pensioner would be easy pickings, but I know how to look after myself.”

The burglar, aged about 16, managed to escape Mr Simcox’s grip and fled over the garden fence.

However, when a second boy appeared from upstairs, the pensioner chased him into the back garden and rugby-tackled him to the ground.

But he also managed to wriggle free and sprint off.

The third teenager watched some of the drama unfold and, rather than help his mates, decided to leave by the front door.

Mr Simcox, who was unhurt, added: “I tried my best to get them, but they were too young and slippery for me. They were like little whippets.”

But he made it clear he would do it all again.

He said: “Other people might be a bit more fragile, but I’m only 68 and that’s young these days.”

Mr Simcox believes the gang got in through his unlocked garage.

Chief Insp Keith Davies, of Castle Point police, said: “I’m glad Mr Simcox came through unscathed.

“It was a very brave thing to do. However, we don’t advise the public to take the law into their own hands.”

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the boys, who were dressed in dark clothing, to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
