Railings blunder means I can’t get on the buses

BUS passengers have been left scratching their heads after a new shelter was put up...directly behind some old metal railings.

This means passengers must leave the shelter from the back and walk around the front of the structure to hop on their bus.

Neighbours watched in amusement as the new shelter was put up outside St Thomas More High School, in Kenilworth Gardens, Westcliff.

Dave Cockerton, 46, who lives in the road, said: “I asked the workmen why they were putting it there and they just said it was where they had been told to put it.

“If the bus pulls up right in front of the shelter, you can’t get on it as the railings are in the way.

“It makes me wonder how much this is costing the taxpayer? The original shelter was taken out and a smaller one put up. Then that was taken away and now we have this. You have to use the path behind the shelter to get out, but it is only about 3ft wide and if you have shopping it’s a bit of a struggle.”

Mehmet Mazhar, Southend Council’s group manager for traffic and highways, said: “We will adjust the railings as soon as possible to ensure unobstructed access.

“We apologise for the temporary inconvenience as a result of our enhancement works, which are due to be completed by the end of April.”

If this is an example of the Council's "enhancement works, God help us all when they have 'enhanced' the seafront, Cuckoo Corner, Progress Road, Victoria Circus, etc, etc.
It is beyond belief that the contractor said he was 'only obeying orders' instead of using a bit of common sense. Doh!

another example of the councils stupidity! it doesn't take a scientist to work out that it is a silly place to put a bus shelter.

I can't believe Dave Cockerton allowed the bus shelter to be built around him.

Funny though this is at first reading, it's a shameful tale. Mr. Mazhar should keep quiet and get it fixed, rather than brag about 'enhancement works'. That sort of 'speak' is further proof that we're living in a George Orwell novel. With regards the workmen making decisions, or questioning their 'bosses', do you really think the ivory tower residents would be receptive to questions from lesser pigs than themselves? (For remember, some pigs are more equal than others.) No, of course not.

This time next year Councillor Waite will probably be trying to explain why all the enhancement works have gone massively over budget. But again it won't be her or any of her managers fault. It will probably be the untrained junior that gets the blame. Buy Carillion shares. You read it here first.

There used to be a bus working party that looked at all these issues so this did not happen, Whats happened to this working party?
Ah the waite took over as chiarman
I talked to Councillor Aylen who apaerntly knows a thing or two about buses he said
What happend here is the railings were put in for rear enterance buses the shelter was installed for front enterance buses .
He had asked for the railings here and all over Southend to be modiefied for front enterance buses some time ago as the problem was obvious

"I talked to Councillor Aylen who aparently knows a thing or two about buses he said

What a load of bull; when was the last time a rear door bus ran through Southend? I went to school by bus in the early 60's on buses run by the Southend Corporation and guess what, almost all of them had front doors even in those days.

Please don't blame the workers, they're employed by dictators.
