Campaigners attacked over Cuckoo Corner protest

A CAMPAIGN group has been criticised for not backing multi-million pound regeneration plans for the town.

Ian Robertson (Con, Chalkwell Ward) said the Priory Crescent road-widening scheme, improvements to Victoria Circus and seafront improvements currently underway were unprecedented regeneration projects for the town in recent years.

He urged the Saxon King in Priory Park group, which is currently based at Cuckoo Corner to prevent trees being felled, to back improvements for the town.

He said: “We are spending millions on these projects and I think it is very sad these people can’t see this as progress and welcome it. This is the largest regeneration plan I have seen in my lifetime, so it is sad some people don’t embrace it.”

He also denied accusations that removal of trees from the cliffs in Westcliff caused slippage which could cost £40million to repair.

The council, which doesn’t have the necessary funding to correct the slippage, is proposing to allow a developer to build a hotel and museum to house the Saxon King remains found in Priory Park. But the campaign group, Skipp, believes a museum should be built on a brownfield site near where the remains were found.

Mr Robertson, said: “The cliffs started to slip long before the trees were cut down. Small slips were caused by the water table freezing and then melting. It is not practical for us to spend £40million to pile the whole cliffs up. Planting more trees on the cliffs may help stabilise them, but it would take more than 50 years to have any effect.”

Protesters spokeswoman Patsy Link responded angrily saying the plans were “degeneration plans not regeneration plans”.

She added: “They want to cover up their mistake of cutting the trees down on the cliffs by putting this hotel on the site.

“The Saxon King will be stuffed away somewhere on the fifth floor without even having his own gallery. The Saxon King shouldn’t be on the seafront with all the kiss-me-quick hats.”

""The Saxon King shouldn’t be on the seafront with all the kiss-me-quick hats.”"

Well perhaps if you stopped standing in the way of all progress in this town, the 'Kiss me quick" image maybe updated.
Patsy Link, what exactly do you protestors stand for? The reasons are becoming increasingly blurred.
......
SBC, stop mucking about. Kick these serial protestors off the public land.
It has been shown that you can't deal with them rationally.

it may be regeneration but this kind of work will not solve any problems just move them further along the road and the other schemes will just make the town look a mess.

Mr Robertson must be as stupid as Anna Waite if he thinks these things will work, the only thing they will do is waste taxpayers money, just look at the poorly designed bus station.

First he says removing trees from the cliffs did not cause the slippage, then he says planting trees may stablise the cliffs..............

Concrete, concrete, and more concrete, purely to grab money from central government, at the expense of a pleasant environment to live in, is not progress.

This is why I will never vote Tory either locally, or nationally.

There are millions in this country who remember the b*st**d Thatcher.

Thatcher sold off our utilities: gas, water, electricity, to foreign companies which resulted in the British people paying more for them than any other country in Europe.

She closed down our core industries, mining, steel, shipbuilding, so now we have to buy foreign coal, foreign steel, foreign ships. At the same time she threw millions onto the dole and created ghettoes where once there were industrial towns.

Then she created the Poll tax, the most unfair tax ever to be visited upon the British people.

She stood up against Argentina while at the same time doing more damage to Britain's industrial base than the Germans could have dreamed of during the last war.

Just how the F**K is that looking out for Britain?

The de forestation of the cliffs did cause the slip as can be seen in other analog cases from other countries.
The trees and public ground at priory are the property of the residents of southend and should be preserved for our children and their children.
**** says it would take 50 years for the trees to be established to shore up the cliff slippage, An admission that the de forestation caused the problem.
The trees in danger at priory are established and survived the storms and so are by natural selection the strongest.
Some are @200 years old.
These fools in local government want to destroy this local genetic legacy and replace them with some weedy saplings that have a known establishment rate of around 2%.
SBC Leave the trees and park alone,

like it or not tree fella are a very respected company who DO know about trees and dont just guess like SKIPP do into the health of trees.
3 of the trees to be removed are diseased and would have been removed with or without the road changes.
A public enquiry agreed that changed where needed to priory crescent and traffic flows and surveys have shown for a long time that this is a spot that needs sorting.
The changes will also serve the soon to be built industrial estate prittlebrook which is to be built on the previous industial site of EKCO .
If the council did bring in another expert to look at the trees SKIPP and others would only say that they were wasting money again, which indead they would be as competent tree surgeons have already identified problems with these 3 trees and others in the town.
I was in warrington in the week and several mature trees there had been cut down due to poor health so this isnt a local thing.

An extra lane, I think you better find out how long this LANE is its no deferent it’s just another play on that other brain numbing expertise of road planners, the two into three lanes at traffic light junctions, then immediately back to two. Even if it did improve it slightly the relief would be short as the council are not concerned about what effect the present congestion has on the locals, only that developers won’t be interested until they get easier access on land east of the bottleneck, then back to square one, I won’t mention that the Airport would add to the congestion because a few people get upset and blow a fuse as they have been told it will absolutely not make the congestion worse as the leaders now best, so I make a promise like the councils that I won’t mention it.

dont worry they can borrow one of my telehandlers with a 4 in 1 bucket that should do the job.
I was thinking bout bringing one home and leaving it on the front path just in case.
I was on the camp bling old site and there is still a few pallets and bits of wood that should have been moved if camp bling had kept to their word with the embankment next to the railway still holding signs of their 4 year occupation and trespass on the railway .

I'm convinced vanilla Ice is smoking something he/she shouldn't. Your posts barely make sense.

This is not about cutting trees a down for the sake of it. The Council have not gone back on their word on this project.
Its written in black and white.
Maybe the council have been keen with the chainsaw with other trees in the conservation areas as someone mentioned somewhere else. . In fact that person (can't find the post) made me look at this whole issue about the trees in Southend from a different angle....BUT not Cuckoo Corner.
You few serial protestors are squatting, and Cuckoo Corner improvements are needed now.
I'm sure the council would love more money to provide the perfect solution, but they don't have it. And after years of delays, they have been given the grant to make improvements. Like most grants, its use it or lose it.
Having read the Council documents, its clear that the 'expert' opinion gives this scheme as best possible with the resources available.
.......
The squatters at Cloud Cuckoo land will never agree. They will never admit they are in the wrong no matter what is planted or said to them. They are not interested.
I just hope they don't cost 'us' all more money and further delays.

You suggested if we wanted to have congestion sorted in southend we should start with the uninsured and untaxed vehicles. Well to sort out the problem at cuckoo corner we have thousands of cars using it daily and how would stopping 1 or 2 cars an hour using this junction help
Southend has ANPR in use all over and this logs and checks all cars entering and leaving southend, it also serves to have these cars removed from the road which has greatly reduced the number of uninsured and untaxed vehicles. Most stops created from ANPR are due to the PNC database flagging vehicles used by known criminals and intel which is stored. What is needed are changes to the road layout in the area as identified several years ago by a public enquiry and long before the airport was being restored to a good passenger terminal.

pmsl has anyone told you that shoebury and thorpe bay (as well as large parts of southend) have been develpoed in those 38 years so that road is being asked to do more than it can.
We could go on about uninsure cars if we like but as that isnt the council duty to sort and isnt actually the issue here as stated southend has had the amount reduced due to ANPR and how do you know there are more than 2 cars using that road without insurance? Do YOU have a confession towards knowing of friends or family using that road without documents?? The road was identified as needing change in a public consultation a few years ago and the changes have been needed way before the first road improvements attempted 9 years ago. Was your move to poole a semi retirment as it seems you still cant grasp that your statement of sorting uninsured and untaxed vehicles would sort out the traffic problems in southend and Priory crescent was not only pointless but extreamly insulting to those who do use that road and sit in traffic everyday for excessive and wasteful time now and not 7 years ago or even 38.

karateman1964 - ignore southendmechanic....
he thinks he is a pretty important man about town, but you just have to read his never ending blathering on, to realise he is just a local plonker.
He is nothing more than a greasmonkey who admits to being a weekend pikey who hides behind one of his kids to jusify mooching off the state.

He also seems to have an abnormal passion for Anna Waite.

Best to ignore him….

Would you not have a problem with a handful of people camped out in your road?? we went through 4 years of them at camp bling and now the same small handful camp the other end.

Can we stop bringing southendmechanics kids into this and stick to talking about cloud Cuckooland?

According to a poll on Councilbust.com (run for a month). 64% were against the protestors, 33% for and 1% didn't care and were bored of it.
Now I don't pretend (like the antis would) that it represents everyone as its a fairly specialist site about whats going on in the council. But it still gives an indication of feeling.
....
The protestors will no doubt dismiss this as it hasn't gone in their favour.

Who the hell does Patsy Link think she is, and why does she think she has the right to dictate where museum artefacts are located? Does she know anything about the geography of the seafront? The Cliffs area doesn't have ANY tacky souvenir shops, you have to get nearer the Pier and Kursaal for those. I think it will be quite at home alongside the beautiful Royal Terrace, cenotaph and bandstand area.

SKIPP go home, you don't speak for Southend!

I was refering to both sides.
Banter or slating between adults is one thing. I don't see why kids or benefits they receive should be brought into this.

soozie you are the one who brought up about benefits which is when i told you what i get and why. If you cant understand that anyone in this country with a disability can and should get DLA (or AA for ovr 65's) and that they are more than entitled to it no matter their background race or savings then you are the one with the problem. YOU and V are the only ones who keep mentioning my caravan which is a legal holiday home in clacton which i use for my disabled 8 year old son to stimulate him as told to by Great ormond street hospital.

Can we get back to Cloud cuckoo Land and leave why and who gets benefits?..... Look after trees yes, protest yes. But don't build Shanty towns and say its in our name. Its not, the road needs updating and from the evidence, on this occasion, the council have not gone back on their word.
Semi mature shrubs have been planted in their place.

I thank you.

You are the one soozie who kept going on about me receiving benefit even though you know what i get this for. All it shows is your racist veiws towards people less fortunate than you and their or familys disability.
This thread is about cuckoo corner and the protesters who have latched onto it. yours and V's personal attacks on many diffrent posters on thi and other subjects just goes to show your narrow mindedness and racist veiws.

yes please lets see my racist comments from other posts please? because only people i have aired veiws about on her are peter and denis walker who i have met several times as a resident when i attended early ppps meetings. i have never used the term tree hugger or even accused anyone on the site of being on benefits or low lifes. i think your problem with mrs waite is that you are jealous and that is your problem because she has been elected by the people of southend so she can act and talk for us, wheres the protesters cant talk for the people of southend as they have not been elected. they can only speak for themselves, personally i beleive in the system we have, it is what seperates us from animals and the undeveloped world and these anti establishment protesters which from your posts you are becoming are a social problem.

Soozie says...

greasemonkey, you need to get your head outta your arse. Or stop drinking that cheap booze - it has addled your mind. Anna Waite is not the saviour amd saint you make her out to be. I can imagine there are many people who are sitting back in their chairs right now laughing at you after reading this post.

PS - I never voted for that woman.

southendmechanic says...
3:34pm Mon 15 Mar 10

no but the people who had a choice in her ward DID and for that reason Anna Waite represents Southend.
So where are these racist posts i am meant to have written???
If you actually read the text in this forum about the road you would see most people on here agree that the protesters should go. But like Skipp you alway avoid the actual subject or question asked if its based on untruths

Soozie says...
3:39pm Mon 15 Mar 10

Anna Waite represents Southend. No she thinks she does. That woman is destroying this town and if you cannot see it then you are as thick I intially thought.

The protesters don't bother me at all. I think they are doing what they think is right and more power to them. As long as they aren't hurting anyone, what is the harm.

Now don't you have 5 kids to look after?

southendmechanic says...

look little miss liar she was VOTED in not by her mates or conseratives but the people of southend.
Southend people voted for her and she won with a majority vote.
You cant just dish power out to members of the public with out the public voting them so the protesters only power is that as one of the voters. now last time i looked that involved putting a small cross in a small box not camping on a roundabout and slowly filling a small peice of land with more junk than steptoes back yard.
We have several protests going on at the moment one for canvey pool, one over houses being built in rochford, and one over the running of southend football club. none of these have camped on public land or threatened to obstruct people going about their work so why is it Skipp feel the need to? well noone can answer that one.
Oh and once again i called you a liar because you still have not posted about the racist comments i have made so come on lets see them theres a good girl

Funny how you get a bit ruder slowly but surely.

Anna Waite got in through the backdoor and you know it you plonker.

Keep kissing her arse, when she is turfed in the next election, perhaps you can both sit and discuss where you went wrong.

Shame that you want to be the man about town, but can't quite cut it eh?

How can widening a road 'regenerate' the area. I am sure that people that live in that area must consider that a bit of an insult as the area can be considered as perfectly ok as it is. It's high time these people stopped using regeneration as a phoney excuse for over development.

It is a well known fact that when a road is 'improved' it is used more - net result? well you work it out.....
