Chalkwell residents urged to remain vigilant over burglary threat

9:50am Monday 15th March 2010

Chalkwell has avoided a rise in burglaries which is affecting Leigh, a residents’ meeting was told.

PC Leon Pezzuolo, based at Leigh police station, spoke during a meeting of Chalkwell Residents’ Assoc-iation, and addressed crime trends in the area.

The officer said while there had been a spike in burglaries across Leigh, there had only been four in Chalkwell in January and February, and none in March so far.

While Chalkwell is relatively unaffected by burglaries, PC Pezzuolo urged residents to continue to be vigilant.

He said: “Chalkwell seems to be an area which is not being targeted, but if you see anything suspicious, I would urge you to phone us so we can get there quickly and be proactive in preventing a crime, rather than having to interview the victims of crime.”

PC Leon said antisocial behaviour was a focus. Operation Madafu, in Leigh, and Operation Redbull, in Southend, were looking at youth nuisance and antisocial behaviour, with teams patrolling on Friday and Saturday evenings. Arrests are being made, groups of youths being dispersed, and alcohol confiscated.

He said Operation Staysafe was also targeting vulnerable youngsters found out late at night.
